Custom Intercooler Reservoir (SLK32)
Custom Intercooler Reservoir (SLK32)
I know this is for an SLK and not a SRT6, but I know people here have done similar mods and thought I'd share my version. And I hang out here more... lol
Let me start by saying that custom projects are NOT cheap... but I liked seeing my design come to life.
The purpose of this mod (for me) is to be able to fill the gallon reservoir with ice when I'm at the dragstrip. As for every 10 deg cooler the intake air is, you gain apx 1% HP. Also, for everyday use, it increases the intercooler system volume by 1 gallon and seperates it from the radiator coolant tank, which will help some...
I'll get into the whole install in a little bit, but I'll jump into a few pics to start:
1) My cardboard mock-up
2) The raw tank after fabrication
3) The tank wrapped in Thermo-Tec insulation
4) Fully installed

Cool deal, I am in the process of doing the exact same thing............except trunk mounted(under carpet) and a 2.5gallon tank.

Nice both of you...
I am in what I guess would be called carboard stage of mine...
It will be trunk mounted...however I am planning on it going in the right side under the carpet in the location of the first aid kit on the SLKs'.
I am thinking the styrofoam will help keep the ice colder longer... then again, it will also prevent dissipation of any heat in there...so its a toss up...
i like being able to keep it stock looking and still have the added separation... and added volume of coolant...should be a fun winter project... we will see how it turns out.

SrtPowa did that mod a bit ago befor he sold me his.. here is a pic of it when it was under the hood but he moved it back to the trunk under the carpet

this is why i don't feel i want a huge reservoir in the back... just a good bit extra for cooling and a place to get dry ice in there for the track...
Re: Custom Intercooler Reservoir (SLK32)
For only a little more $$ then the price of a pre-made "off-the-shelf" tank - I had a custom IC Tank fabbed that didn't require any extra hose routing (I used the stock hoses) and provided lots of extra fluid flow. Combined with the bigger HE and some heat wrap on the IC..... only smiles when I look at the IAT gauge
If anyone would like some of the heat shield wrap - I have a huge roll and offer it free of charge - just pay the postage....

I thought about the tank in the trunk, but I think that the further away from the intercooler, the warmer your ice-water will be after running though all that hose.
As there are no off the shelf tanks that I found to fit in the SLK, I had no choice but to fab one myself. It came out about the same amount as a Code3 C32 kit though. And I was able to use the stock hoses too. Although, I ended up replacing the upper one with a shorter hose from the auto parts store.
I never thought about wrapping the SC intercooler. Good idea! As I have a ton of the insulation left, I might try that too.

Insulating the intercooler from engine bay temps will help prevent heat build up with all applications.
For longer runs (street, highway, Auto-X, Texas Mile, etc..) the more fluid you can add circulating in the system, the larger you can make the surface area of your HE and more you can increase the rate of fluid flow (IC pump) - - then the greater the medium for heat transfer. Not huge gains - but it does help.
For 1/4 mile runs - I think the best setup would be to isolate the heat exchanger from the IC system with a set of bypass valves, install a custom flow tank as close as you can to the intercooler, ICE down the coolant and run the pump just prior to staging. This would give you the best chance of lowering your IAT's for short runs (10 - 15 seconds) when the blower is at full speed.
On a hot day at the drag strip, the HE will just as effectively heat up your ice cold fluid prior to staging (if not better due the temperature differential) as it would dissipate heat from IC fluid. I found this out on a hot day after supercooling my IC fluid with dry ice and monitoring my IAT gauge.
