Anyone else have difficulty with SC pulley washer?
Anyone else have difficulty with SC pulley washer?
I put on the Code3 SC pulley yesterday, expecting it to take less than 20 minutes. Everything went fine except for the washer for the SC pulley (The one with the 2 alignment pin holes). This thing felt like it was glued to the pins, even though I am sure it wasn't.
The alignment holes on the washer were definitely a bit too small for the pins. It took me about 25 minutes to pull that thing off the first time using a pair of pliers. I was of course pulling straight out so as to not damage the alignment pins.
Getting the washer back on was easier, but still required the use of a rubber mallet once aligned on the pins. Since the gap was way too much after adding the 4 shims that came with the C3P pulley along with the 4 stock shims, I had to pull it back off. Even the second and third times I took the washer off, it took a stupid amount of effort. Putting it back each time required the use of the rubber mallet, as well.
Has anyone else encountered this? I was considering making the alignment holes on the washer a bit larger in diameter, but decided against it in case of balancing issues. Of course, the edges of the washer were marred a little bit from using the pliers and trying to get good grip and them slipping, so hopefully that doesn't affect anything.
Also, when I took the stock pulley off, there were already 4 metal shims. I had to actually remove 1 of the stock shims and use none of the ones that came with the C3P pulley to get the gap to 0.025" with the C3P pulley on. Is that also normal?
Thanks all.

Re: Anyone else have difficulty with SC pulley washer?
When I changed mine, the washer came off with a relative ease. I'm not saying it fell out, but no pliers were required.
As to the shims, if I remember correctly I used 2 total. From other threads I've read, the number of shims seems almost random; some with 5, others with none. I found this suprising, however, because I would imagine that these are machined with quite an accuracy and should all be very close in size.
I say if your confident with your work and you've triple-checked everything, then you should be A OK.

Re: Anyone else have difficulty with SC pulley washer?
i think i used a total of 6 shims on mine when i had the code3.
as far as difficulty taking it off, i dont remember having a hard time with the washer. i remember having a hard time taking off the pulley....but that was when the car was hot, which caused the metal to expand. once the car was cool, the pulley slid off with a little effort.
and yes, it seems the addition of shims is totally random

Re: Anyone else have difficulty with SC pulley washer?
your not alone!! i had a heck of a time getting the washer and the pulley off. i cleaned the washer with solvent and ran a pick thru the holes to clean them out. after that it went on easily.
as for the washers i needed 5 spacers to get mine spaced. from what brandon told me dont worry so much about spacing numbers as getting the pulley as close as possible without rubbing the clutch. also do not I REPEAT do not overtorque the bolt 20 nm not 20 ft/lbs. its metric torque converted to approx 15 ft/lbs. if you overtorque you will break the bolt

Re: Anyone else have difficulty with SC pulley washer?
Thanks for all the replies everyone. That was quick!
Yeah, I am sure I did it all correctly, actually a very simplistic process. I am running it with a 0.025 gap at the tightest point and about 0.028 gap at the farthest point.
Bolt was tightened to 14.75 ft/lbs (20Nm).
Thanks again everyone.

Re: Anyone else have difficulty with SC pulley washer?
If that was the first time the washer was removed it was hard to take off cuz they are staked on to the alignment pins. Look closely at the holes you'll see what I mean.
If you try to put the washer back on and it won't go on it's cuz you have it on backwards and the pinched side of the holes may prevent the washer from going on smoothly.
I never had that problem myself. Just heard that someone might have.

Re: Anyone else have difficulty with SC pulley washer?
Tighed, no, the washer is not on backwards. The holes are aligned so that if put on incorrectly, the bolt will not line up. I verified this because as I took the washer off, I marked the corresponding holes to pins. On the second attempt, I figured I'd try reversing them to see if it slid on any easier. No easier and the bolt would not slide in straight, so I put it back the right way.
