Default Sanity check on oil change interval

Yes, I'm a little cheap, but also I don't want to throw out perfectly good oil (think green). I changed the oil (Mobil1 0W-40) last fall and drove the car less than 1000 miles this summer. Not raced, not dusty conditions, just gently around town and some highway. The oil on the dipstick still looks golden, not dirty. Given I'm using a top-rated synthetic, is it really mechanically necessary to change the oil? (Please don't tell me it's cheap "insurance"...I really want to know if synthetic oil breaks down with age or is good for a couple years.)

i could be wrong but i think its more related to the condensation buildup in the pan during the time your car sat. as you said its cheap ins. to drain it and refill with fresh

If you started it every few weeks you should be ok. I change mine every 1000 miles, but I take it to the track. Sometimes it sits for a month or more in between visits. I just fire it up every week or so to keep the battery strong. Mine always looks very clean at the 1000 mark as well.

Seriously cruzin... i mean if you have extra money i'll be first on the list to volunteer to take some.

on a business note...even if you do take it to the track and feel it needs to be changed quite often. if you changed every 1500miles instead of 1000 you would realize a savings of 50%. If you changed every 2000miles instead of 1000 you would say a 100% savings...just some food for thought.

I've only changed it 6 times in 2 years, sounds like a cheap ol' guy now doesn't it.

You may be a little cheap. I'm BIG cheap! Why do you think I try to come up with all of those DIY projects?!
As far as oli changes...

When the FSS tells me to change it. I change it.

That reminds me, gotta do the coupe this weekend!

LoL and you run stacked right? What is your tune? If you haven't blown a motor yet then I would say most of us are pretty safe even if we are a little lean. :P

I'll go with the tighed1 on this. The FSS (Flexible Service System) actually does a pretty good job of analyzing the oil - just short of an actual lab test - but I'd ignore any reference it makes to time. The way it measures contaminants in the oil weighed against your driving style is pretty clever.

I make a habit of changing every 5K or so, but always reset the FSS as a final word and reminder.

Thats what doesn't make sense to me!!! I am not even running stacked yet! lol. I do find it hard to believe that he is running that rich stacked though. Maybe I have a clogged fuel filter. Yeah, we are definitely going to get to the bottom of this!

change it just for shitsngiggles. it can't hurt to change. get one on order you can usually have it in the next day.

i'd hate for all this fuss to be over a fuel filter and not the tune.

True.......The car does have 52k on the clock. I am sure it's never been changed either.

Looks like it is going to cost you about $30. I would make the call today and see if you can get it ordered. Then it should be in tomorrow or thursday.

My brother can have it there today if we wanted. So hopefully I can get down there Thursday to his shop to install the filter. Is the filter right next to the pump??
