Squeaky engine noise?
Squeaky engine noise?
My srt6 just started having a slight squeak in the engine. It sounds like it's towards the very front, around the belt area. It sounds like it's mostly at low rpm's, and goes away at anything above that.
I haven't noticed any power loss though. Everything seems to be working fine, no heat problems or anything. Just a squeak, but an annoying one.
It's getting cold here at night, maybe it just caught a cold?

seemed when the s/c kicked in thats when i heard the noise then it would dissapear. It had to be one of the three c3 pulleys bearings starting to go.I
would use the woodyscope test on your pulleys. Good luck finding the source
of the problem. ILLCYA
Re: Squeaky engine noise?
It's all stock except for a DIY code 3 intake.
What exactly do I do with the hose. I searched and found another post, but it wasn't very specific, and this kid needs specifics. I know I hold one side to my ear and check.... what?
And just assuming it is a bearing, how much do those cost to replace? And are they usually covered under a powertrain warranty?

Re: Squeaky engine noise?
it depends on the bearing. s/c pulley bearing 56$, idler pulleys replaced as a unit 20$ tensioner pulley also replaced as a unit 40$
now a/c alternator water pump bearings get into a whole nother price range!
for me when i did my c3 swap the s/c pulley bearing 2 idler bearing and tensioner puleey all showed signs of bearing wear so i replaced them all. total cost was under 150$ or so.
its just not worth risking a bearing failure and the thought of a broken pulley ping-ponging around the front of the engine just hurts!

NOTE: Be VERY careful as there are moving things (belt, pulleys) that want to grab the hose out of yer hand!
Re: Squeaky engine noise?
Well, the noise stopped.
Got in this morning to pick up a friend, and it wasn't making any unusual noises. Drove it around several more times, still no noise.
Should I still be worried? I mean, I can't check with the hose thing now, it's not making the noise. I'll obviously listen out for it to come back, but it's been gone all day.
Anything I should check still?

Re: Squeaky engine noise?
I dont think it is a bearing at all.... I have the same problem at really low rpm take off almost like a high pitched chirp when your not getting on it. It is the clutch on the supercharger there have been numerous post about this on MB world I just cant seem to find them. Guys were freaking out taking there cars in and mercedes was replacing the whole supercharger because there was no way to order just the clutch assembly. With that being said when they got tired of replacing superchargers they started lubing the clutch. I will keep looking YTD i think there is no fix, but it wasnt as major as everyone thought.

Re: Squeaky engine noise?
found it, still no answer but John is on the problem, this problem has been around for awhile. I am thinking a NW pulley saver kit, and an NSK bearing should do the trick.

unplug the supercharger clutch drive around see if the noise goes away. If it does you have your clutch engaging answer. Mine does not do it all the time so i have no way of really checking. Yours sounds pretty often I would think this would work for you.

Re: Squeaky engine noise?
It's definitely not that. I get that noise all the time, just like you said, when pushing the gas pedal but not pushing hard. Screechy noise. Kind of annoying, but I got used to it.
This noise was different. It was only audible at idle and just over. It was a completely different noise than the SC screechy noise. As far as I know, the screechy SC thing isn't a problem right? Just an annoyance.

Re: Squeaky engine noise?
Ok, squeaky noise came back. It seems to want to go away when it's warmed up so it's hard to get to look at unless I go out and start up the car just to check.
I did that today though, and it sounds like it is coming from the pulley just low left of the SC pulley. It's a smooth one. The guy at the shop I went to so he could check it out said he wasn't sure if it was a pulley or it was just the belt being too "glazed" and sliding around on it until it got warm. Does this sound like a possibility or is it still probably the bearings?
I did go by oreilly's to look at the new stuff. They looked it up and it was 200+ bucks for that pulley (I think it also had the mounting bracket on it), which is a LOT. So for you guys that have the knowledge, do I need to replace the whole pulley, or can I just get the bearings and put them in there?
And where would you recommend I order whatever part I need from to keep the cost down?

Re: Squeaky engine noise?
It sounds like your talking about the idler pulley. No way it costs $200.. you can get it from MB for about $70 I think, or you can get a Gates equivilant for about $20 or so. One bolt to pull, slap in the new pulley and re-install the bolt with blue loctite and torque to spec.
