Little help... Radiator fan has issues
Little help... Radiator fan has issues
These past two weeks after getting SRT back from the dealer the radiator fan would stop working. I went back to the dealer and they couldn't duplicate the problem. (sounds familiar) Every day on the way home the fan stops working for 10 min and the temp goes up above the 1/2 way point. Today the temperature hit the beginning of the red zone. I turned the heater up to full just to cool the engine till I got home. Tough when its 93 outside lol. This was the first time the rad fan didn't kick back on.
I reseated the ECU... didn't help.
Any ideas?

Re: Little help... Radiator fan has issues
Your fan is powered by the ecu thru a Transisitorized pulse width modulated controller located on the driver fender. It feeds the power to the motor and starts out about 4 volts when measured by a voltmeter.
Please treat the control module with the high dollar respect it deserves.
Your fan motor should have a low reisitance, I have not measured it but estimate that it should have less than 5 ohms of resistance. Jumpering the fan to 12 volts will not get you any data cause your fan runs for a while.
Hook up a voltmeter, tape it in and drive around till it quits.
Got voltage ??? motor is bad
No voltage ?? Module and drive circuits are bad ( driver fender )

Took the modular off her xf pluged into mine ,.......no fan...
Re: Little help... Radiator fan has issues
THe heavy leads going into the module are 12v and ground. YOu can meter the power lead.
The other lead should have 0.0 volts to the frame, and IF it reads 0.0 you can use an OHM meter to verify ground of less than 2 ohms.
Good luck, Woody
BTW the two little leads on the module are digital and need a scope to make sense of.. It could also be the engine thermometer which is on the passenger side of the thermostat, the little black plastic thermisitor module with a two wire connector. WW

This afternoon I pulled the ECU out again and reseated all the plugins........................................... ......
I let the XF warm up and what do you know............. The fan kicked on.......
Monday afternoon on the way home we will see if that corrected the problem..... CROSSING MY FINGERS.

3/4 of the way home ,............. FRACK,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, radiator light comes on and the temp guage goes up just past the 1/2 line...... drove to the dealer............. pull in and thew fan still not on. I go inside 2 min pulling up name call the mechanic......... I turn around and hear the f,,,,g fan kick on. The mechanic has no clue. And won't or can't guess what is causing the problem. Leaving the car Tues at the dealer.
This is starting to really tick me off. Actually it is starting to really **** me off.

Multimeters are cheap at harbor freight, like 3$ EACH and work fine. Blow it up and you cant complain.
They also include instructions, and there are pleanty of places on the web.
Point:
Intermittants are just that and hard to fix unless you catch them at the right time.
I believe that the module may be intermittant and you can swap them for a week or so to make a long term test.
Ordering the multimeters is a simple way to extend your skill set and capability.

If there are any members that are not conversant with multimeters, Ill sign up to try and explain the use and techniques needed to do electical troubleshooting. Its like shooting a weapon, show you and its sticks with you, TO your benefit.Woody

Re: Little help... Radiator fan has issues
There is going to be a conclusion. I swapped the modular from my XF into Ashley's. She went to track or cross country practice ..........She called to say "THANKS ALOT"......... Her AC had stopped and the radiator light came on.
I guess that definatively means the modulator is bad.
There is also a bearing going on her SRT. Not sure if it is the SC bearing or the one next to it. Guess the dealer can replace the Mod with the bearing or maybe the supercharger.
My XF is running great now.
