What do you get when you combine a bunch of rehashed, last-generation Mercedes-Benz chassis components with overwrought styling and a bit of D-town pride? This bright-eyed hunk of weirdness, that’s what.

The Crossfire fell victim to that most heinous of sporty-car sins: It did nothing uniquely. Its chassis was borrowed from the 1997-to-2004 Mercedes-Benz SLK, and like the SLK, the Crossfire was a decent, if not brilliant, sporting GT. Potential buyers were put off by the art-deco looks and the $35,000-plus buy-in, and many simply bought an SLK instead. Or an Infiniti G35 or a BMW 3-series, both of which were more fun to drive than the Crossfire, and neither of which looked like a dog in the middle of a life-altering dump. (Incidentally, whose bright idea was it to name a car after multidirectional gunfire, anyway? In what world do you want a car whose name implies that it might go off in any direction at any moment, killing innocent bystanders?)

How’s this for flop: In the second year of Crossfire production, Chrysler actually resorted to dumping excess inventory on Overstock.com. Flop, flop, flopperoo.

All the above may well be true. But, the product is unique enough to get a bunch of weirdos to buy one, two or three of them and get this,

They formed a club!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Welcome to it pal,

BTW, rehashing old parts under a new skin is not news or unusual. First Ford Mustang was a Falcon.

I hate that stupid saying that our cars look like a dog craping. Then what does a porsche look like. We basically have the same looking back as the carrera. And how is a 3 series more fun to drive around then our cars. I see about 40 3 series a day and how many crossfire 3 in a month. I love people asking what my car is or how fast it goes or kids that say nice car. If i had a 3 series or any car they like better i would just be another car. And if people likes the slk why can't they like our cars.

I think the back end of the crossfire is one of the worst looking rear ends. The SRT wing helps out IMO.

The article is 100% right. The design was wayyyyyyyyyy too off beat and it cost wayyyyyyyy too much. Hence they were thrown on overstock.com and we're able to buy AMG bulit cars for less than 20K with virtually low miles.

It also adds to the shock value when you drag someone down the free way or pull a low 12 at the race track.

ouch! - but beauty is subjective and I bought my srt in 2007 because it was extremely fast, under $22k with only 14k miles on it, unique, and... extremely fast. Hey, it could beat a boxster and a nismo z around the track, for a lot less money (used)

The worst looking back end, in my humble opinion, was that of the late 70's GM "N" bodies, Olds Starfire, Buick Sky Hawk, Chevy Monza. It looked like the designers got to the back of the car and said to themselves, "OK, now what?"

I owned one and can tell you it got a lot of angry smirks from all the street racers who had to look at it. Same thing with either of my Crossfires. But the SRT must be the ugliest, from the number of p!ssed off views I see in it's rear view mirror.

BTW, My wife drives the SRT home at nite and i follow in the NA roadster. I have to tell you, I'm looking at her rear end and liking it all the way home.

If the # of vehicles sold is the main criterion for whether a car is a good car or not, I guess the Pinto was a really hot car. Add to that list the K-Cars. If you like what you got, that's what matters. One of my best friends says my Crossfire is one of most gorgeous vehicles he's seen while another best friend says it is "quite ugly." Needless to say, the latter never got to drive my Crossfire. That'll keep him in suspense.

Not if you like large rear fender hips and the style of a 1930's era boat-tail speedster!

Thats the xfire and not the srt6, two different cars in terms of performance. Brand new the price was probably a joke. I think if a review was to be done now based on the 2nd hand market and what else is available at this price it sells for the srt is a great buy and would get good reviews.

Needing an additional vehicle for the summer (my truck would be out of commishion for 2-3 months) I had an option to spend 18K on any other car or.....a Raquel Welch of the auto scene..a little older but.........I went with Raquel...........Happily..............

Well I think others have posted that article. Here is what I can tell you about what people in general think of our cars I work at a building with about 500 people in it and have gotten about 25 compliments of nice looking car 2 or 3 of it's the best looking car on the lot and a few I really love your car. Since I work at a Credit Union it's about 80% women so what two tons of fun says really makes little difference. Even though the car is unique there is still alot of people who liked it and would have liked to buy one but it was to expensive or not practical for them. Next time your in a parking lot with more thne 50 cars look around and tell me which one catches your eye....it will probably be the one you drove in. The car handles well, brakes well will last most likely well into the high 100k mark.

The knock on our cars was that they were over priced and the base and limited did not perform like the cheaper 350z and Mustang GT in the Straight line. We as a community have been fixing the straight line issue and were getting the cars cheap now so we have alot more to tinker with. Nice thing for the 2004 guys is anything we do we can later down the road swap to an a low mileage 2007-08 and transfer our stuff over.

*Edit* SRT's you have no idea how rare your car is already try searching for them for sale or can you count the last time you have ever seen one on the road other then a Crossfire meet? I've been hunting for them in California one of the most largest populated states in the US and there is about 3 in a 500 hundred mile radius from San Diego. BMW M3 about 100+, 350z 400+'S, Mustang GT 400+, Porsche Boxster 200+.

Sure we do. 900 or so roadsters and about 2000 coupes.
A rare car that no body cares about = exactly what happened. Cars sitting on the lot and selling new for 50% MSRP 2+ years after the fact.

actually, in my area of calif., a two-seat sports car is a luxury. our cars have a lot of presence. i never fail to get compliments on my graphite one. the people who really look it over (especially teens and the import tuner crowd) are "car types." i've seen about 10 or so crossfires around fresno and they are always limiteds.

And teens and import tuner crowd are usually not out shopping for $46,000-$52,000 Chryslers.

Hence why these cars are now a huge bargin.

interesting..... i was JUST stopped at the gas station, and a man in his 40's-50's, walked across the parking lot to say, "that is the coolest car i have ever seen!!! "

had tons of people compliment my car even when it was basically stock on the exterior. i'm confused as far as attacking the aesthetics...

actually, our srts are a bargain now because of market factors. the teens probably stare at my car for the same reasons i used to at their age. namely, what is it? and i'd like one...preferrably with a hot girl in the passenger seat. the tuner crowd always appears to be very respectful.

Every single part of my crossfires styling I love! From the back to the front, and everything in-between! if you don't like the styling then don't buy a crossfire! I'd say the styling of the crossfire is one of the industries best ever styled cars! I don't care that Chrysler couldn't sell them, it doesn't matter! Chrysler designed the crossfires shape and concept. It's like no other car ever made! Most of the people who diss the Crossfire either are jealous or ignorant. And more than likely i'll kick their butts in any race with my srt-6!
