Wonder how much input the guy who designed the PT had in it? He did go to GM but the HHR may have been on the drawing board before he got there. The panel version is what they should have offered in the PT. It seems that when Chevy came out with the HHR the PT sales bit the dust.
As for the Caliber.......not a fan, I like the Nitro much better.
The same designer who designed the PT was hired by GM to make the HHR. Actually if you go to the PT concept, there were 3 models, the PT hard top, the Convertible, and the Panel Truck ( HHR). Chrysler made the 1st two, and then GM basically made the last one, the HHR. So basically all HHR's are a Chrysler design.

Also The PT's sales didn't bite the dust when the HHR came out, Chrysler sold over a million PT's, and it was the Car of the Year in 2001. Also they were selling for 35,000 dollars because the demand was outrageous when they 1st came out. I own the Rag top Turbo, and its one of the finest vehicles I've ever owned. I have over 50,000 trouble free miles on it, and its a 2005.

Also I'd say to Stick with the Caliber over the HHR. I've spoken to many owners who say their HHR is to heavy, too slow, and fuel mileage is very low.

The Caliber should get almost 30 miles the the Gallon. It's a smaller car than the HHR, and it does have a lot of room!

Also I wouldn't worry about resale value, unless you're buying it only to sell it....which makes no sense to me?

Every car loses value after you buy it.

No I'm buying used- so the worse it depreciated the BETTER! PS I don't think the HHR is any heavier than the CSRT4, however I'd have to look that up.
