Im having a hard time understanding how its possible for a pulley that produces less boost to out run a pulley that produces more (185) I always thought the idea was the more boost u can achieve the faster/more powerful your car would be?! What factors if any am i not understanding in this great pulley debate?

 

Heat from compressing the air effecting the air intake temps. If you compress air to much through the supercharger you start to loose thermal efficiency, or the air gets so hot that the charge is less dense and performance suffers.

 

I'm no expert on the subject, so please correct me if I'm mistaken. But, I'm pretty sure it's not the pressure of the air entering the engine, but the amount. For example, guys like me with just a pulley are running higher boost than someone with the same setup plus intake manifolds. But the guy with the manifolds is gonna make more power, with less boost because of higher allowances for flow. That made more sense in my head...

 

I said it before and I will say it again, the heat made by the larger boost pulleys deplete the extra horsepower. The 178 or Code 3 is the most efficent way to make power.

 

ive had the code3, the evosport 178, and now the 185....and i can confidentely say that my 185 is much faster and more powerful than my last two setups.

At the Texas Mile I was able to run the mile from a dead stop @ WOT to 160 + MPH (about 5,500 engine RPM) - - six to eight times per day

On Sat and Sun when the air temps were in the 70's - low 80's - my IAT's never got above 145* F.

A little math magic:

With the 185mm pulley, the SC spins at 13,750 RPM (5,500 engine RPM * 2.5 ratio) - this was my observed engine RPM at the mile mark.

The 178mm pulley will spin the SC at 13,750 RPM when your engine RPM is at 5,716 (5,700 * 2.4054)

If the 185 makes to much heat at 5,500 engine RPM, so does the 178mm pulley at 5,716 RPM. Assuming all our Supercharges all make the same heat at the same RPM with the same outside temp under the same load, at the same DA, etc...right?


The 185 is a 20% overdrive pulley
The 178 is a 16% overdrive pulley

This would mean that our engines are so fickle that an 4% increase in boost across the powerband is all it takes to "loose" power.

producing boost does increase heat.

With the heat exchanger upgrade, helping the inter- coolers function. you get rid of some of the increased heat in the air, making the air denser.

More boost allows you to add more fuel, More fuel more power

 

You forgot to mention that the FASTEST proven(in the standing mile) SRT-6 in the WORLD is running a 185 pulley!!! It's nice that us 185ers finally have something to call our own since we can't claim the fastest or quickest 1/4 mile times.

 

I easily left 10+ MPH (and 800 RPM's) on table in Texas.

Between tires (PS2's don't launch for crud), four catalytic converters, a rookie driver and perhaps needing a 100 octane tune - I have something to work towards for next year...

1/4 X 4 = lot of fun

 

Easy way to not have a heating problem.... Methanol/Water setup or just a little 35 shot of NOS will always do the trick.

 

What are the best ways/mods aviailable to keep those temps down other than the HE?

Yup, right into the throttle body. The cooling benifit is just as good as the HP

 

You mean to say the only SRT6's to run the standing mile has a 185.

I have a few things left to finish on my wet kit and hope to test a 75 next weekend. I also Have a dry kit. Eventually I would like to spray a 25 dry off the line and the 75 will come on automatically in 2nd.
