How good is the mickey thompson et streets drivability on the streets? I know they hook great on the strip but do they ride okay on the streets? Some say yes and some say no. Any opinions?

I live several hours away from any tracks so i would need one that does okay on the streets to get me there and back. i have had the bf goodrich in the past and they were just okay and i know 99% of the reviews say nitto drag radials are great on the street but not much better than regular street tires on the strip.

 

A friend of mine has them, so just watch them in the rain and the only other thing is they'll be much louder when it comes to road noise and will wear out much faster.

 

lol yeah those drag radials can be really scary in the rain! the bfgoodrich drag radials i had before was like driving on ice when it rained.

 

I had them on the mustang, and they are the most popular tire I sell at work. They feel awesome (especially when you poke them with your finger) at any time besides when it rains and when you realize they are shot after a couple thousand miles. But they are made of essentially the same compound as mickey thompson's slicks, except they have a bunch of metal and nylon reinforcing them. People run in the 7's with them, and you can completely do a wheelie with them. BFG's are good in terms of longevity, but do not offer anywhere near the bite the mickeys do.

 

yeah it sucks spending almost $400 for tires that only last a short time lol.

i was not too impressed with the bfgoodrich drag radials, they were not much better than street tires and everything i read about the nitto's were even worse.

 

I ran then all last summer.
Lets see I ran them on the car 1 1/2 hours one way to two different tracks on city streets and they were fine...even with the top down.
And another track two hours one way.
Also did them on tollways and freeways...have not pushed them past 100 but have gone non stop on them at 100 on the tollway for about 45 minutes and was fine and that was in 95 plus heat.
Didn't notice more noise with them and the top down then I get with BFG KDW2's.
But with the wind buffeting and the stereo on 40 ya don't hear much anyway.
Did my best times on them...
They will fill a parking lot with smoke and pull black top up....

I bought them because of the fact that I knew I would be doing freeway speeds and going distances.

Photoman, I have them for my Aero and I will likely drive them the 40 miles to Woodburn and back for track days. I only drove on them once last year and I hit wet roads on the way home and poked along to keep it in my lane.

you have the wrong image in the first post, the et streets do not have the side tread, just a few slits/lines down the center. there is no way i would run them for more then a few minutes on the road, maybe if we lived 15 minutes from the track but we are an hour away so ill either put them in the trunk or we usually bring the pickup also to the track to hold the wheels/tools/cooler/ect...

if your going to the track yourself, pull the pass seat and you can put one wheel there along with a jack and stand and the other wheel can go int he trunk without needing to deflate them (in a coupe)

then you can deflate both tires and fit both wheels in the trunk nto much room for a jack and tools back there also at that point tho. pass side floorboard will most likely need to be utilized.

personally i would still not drive "several hours" on them. we get 100 burnouts/ 1/4 mile passes on a set of slicks so i dont think they would last very long on road trips. you can do it but its going to get expensive

 

My buddy ran those tires on his 900bhp Camaro and they lasted a little less than a thousand miles on the street. BFG's are supposed to last 5,000 miles and the Nitto 555Rs are supposed to last 15,000 miles. The more miles it lasts the harder the compound the tire is made of...............which means less traction.

 

Being as soft as they are you really need to be careful of any kind of road debris cutting them also. I would love to get a set as the closest track is ATCO in NJ, but I doubt drag radials would survive Throgs Neck and GW Bridge with out being ripped to shreds by all the car parts and debris left on the roadways. Call Mickey Thompson and see what they state, several hours away is pretty far when you still have to add in the return trip

 

I second the advice of taking a set of 16's to the track. You can wrap each one in a big trash bag, and put one in the trunk and one on the passenger side. You don't have to take out the seat if you don't want to. Home depot sells a small jack for $40 bucks.
That's only if you want to run hoosiers or MT's. As far as Nitto's hooking that will depend on your track prep. Heck your stock tires will hook on a nhra race prepped day. It's the normal test n' tune days that track prep sucks.

My Nitto's are ok on the street, but they have seen no wet weather. I had a set on my old Z-28 and got at least 10K miles out of them with weekend trips to the track . I drove on them rain or shine with no real issues.

 

Same here with my Nittos. MT Streets are the best way to go for sure for best traction without actually putting on race slicks.

 

If you're going to get serious - then it's time to get serious.
