Default Differential Mod

I was just pouring over some of these diagrams, and I had an idea about the differential.

We use an electronic differential that will lay two black marks in a straight line, but will turn to one-tire-fire if you go sideways or around a bend. It electronically senses the rear tire RPMs.

Here is a link to the system: http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.asp...SGR=680&SGN=26

My idea was to simply unplug it and see if the differential stays locked full time(which may be beneficial under certain circumstances). If this is the case, it may be possible to rig up a resistor so that the computer thinks its plugged in, and within parameters to allow the diff. to be locked. This means you could go from both wheels locked to stock with the flip of a switch...

Any takers?

I would assume the sensor they use is the ABS sensor. This would indicate that you would have no ABS if you flipped the switch. Interesting thought but what advantage would this give you?

Our cars control the traction and attempts to get traction by HITTTING THE BRAKE ON THE SPINNING WHEEL> NOT A GOOD PLAN for performance.

THe phantom grip is the best bet so far for us.

Lots of smoke, and the smell of burning rubber!

Woody, thats what I'm saying... It senses that wheel is spinning by measuring its speed against the other wheels... So if we unplug the wheel RPM sensor, it's safe to say the computer won't know the wheel is spinning and therefore won't apply the brake to it.

Sounds like logic to me. I'm curious to see how it works out.

With the sensor unplugged you have T/C turned off. This causes a loss of equality and the least loaded wheel spins. THis is the result of what is called an OPEN rear, there is no inherant balancing effort.

THe phantom grip I installed and Jim AMC( add 4 numbers) is an advocate of now, adds spring tension to pre load the cone gears to add DRAG between the two axle halves like the mercedes Kleeman design unit does. In a hard turn the wheels decouple and work fine as in my attempts to master autocrossing. See results of phantom grip below, NO T/C on.

The E-Diff in the Crossfire is an open differential with braking done on the slipping wheel to restore torque to the other wheel.

There's no such thing as locking the diff "full time" as doing so would require that your brakes basically dissipate 1/2 the total energy output of the car at all times. Doing something like this would not involve "unplugging" anything, and would probably involve cooked brakes also.

Unplugging the brake sensor would do two things:

1. Your differential would become an open differential
2. Your ABS light would turn on.
