Years ago I had to take safety training to drive a company van. They re-emphasized many times to avoid backing up if at all possible. The simple secret is to find a parking spot where you can pull through, even if it means you have to walk a little farther to the store (or bar). The double benefit: it is less likely some door swinging moron will park next to you.
But I agree with the side mirror setting process. I use that now plus I always look over my shoulder. It comes from riding a motorcycle and knowing just how big that blind spot really is no matter how you adjust.
The cars I rented in Germany all had a "bend" in the mirror that greatly reduced the blind spot. It took a little getting used to but worked real well. I always wonder why they don't introduce it here since it expands rear visibility. I guess for the same reason they don't add DRL and rear fog lights.
