So, what does the air diverter plate do and what are the negatives about removing the functionality of that air diverter plate? Is the air fuel mixture disrupted? Will the car run lean?

By the looks of its design I'd say the diverter helps direct the incoming air into the supercharger.

Negatives? Can't think of any unless you are bothered by the increase of whine from the supercharger (SC) sucking in copious amounts of air! The air that is coming in through the "performance intake" (PI) will actually perform the same task as the diverter plate. As the air from the filtered intakes flows towards the SC, the air from the PI will direct all of the air into the SC.

Air and fuel aren't mixed until after the air has passed through the SC, intercooler and through the intake. So no disruptions.

Will it run lean? The computer is able to make adjustments for minor changes like this. It's when you get into forcing too much air (BIG boost) that you run into problems like leaning out the fuel mixture.

I performed the diy intake mod today. Found that a wire screen for a paint roller 5 gal bucket worked great $2.00. Also had some 3 stage filter material about 1" thick to use looks and sounds great. thanks all!

I've done the same mod as well. I used metal gutter mesh and a few layers of vent filter sprayed with foam filter oil. This will suffice until I get proper foam filter elements.

I can definitely hear the supercharger working (not so much with the windows rolled down). Butt dyno can't tell a power or response difference... still bloody fast from 80 to 100.

This is the 3 stage filter material.

And the wire screen material

Hmm dont like the look of that filter material. It looks like a balled up bunch of bleached pubic hair. Looks like some of the filter material could be sucked in?

I would rather get less air stock than suck up hot air with that piece.

Then just do a proper intake upgrade. But thats just me.

I'm a believer that the added air out weighs the effects of the warmer air that is being ingested. Plus once you get rolling the air you are taking in is at the back of the engine is where you aren't getting major heat from the exhaust and such.
Plus you get the sound!

The material is 3 stage each stage to catch different size particales. Last stage not seen in photo is very tight woven',.nothing but air will get through. The other 2 stages have a tack applied to them to hold particales in place ,so not to top load last stage. May not look good but sounds great .

Your intake has grown pubes. Looks a lot like mine

I need to add a layer of foam between the mesh and y-pipe for a better seal (although I'm sure it's tight and sealed enough).

When/if I decide on more boost I'll go with a different intake setup. For now it's been a fun mod and only took a few minutes and a few bucks!

I'm not knocking this mod, but I don't understand why you guys would do this over a CAI?! Or even at least the sl55 setup?

The car already has two intake/filters why not add a third!

Because it is a simple and quick way to derestrict the stock intake, similar to Code 3's performance intake which is advertised to gain 4-7 rwhp and costs $150. It's essentially a cage, cut like the stock diverter plate, with a Uni foam filter element sandwiched inbetween.

I'm not trying to downplay the Code 3 intake in any way whatsoever. It uses high quality materials and is much better finished than I myself could fabricate.

How often do you need to clean/change this. I know from running RC cars with this similar type air cleaner, much mess oil, dirt etc. Gets into it and you need to clean it after every race?

PRICE!
I made mine for free. Used materials I had around the garage. Can't beat the power per dollar ratio. $0

I have been running this for over a month and it looks like I'll be able to go six months or more easy before changing the filter.

+1

Yep, can’t hardly beat the free and low cost mods that actually make an improvement. Ingenuity at its finest.

Incidentally, did your 181mm get bolted to the crank this weekend?
