Driveline thump solved
Driveline thump solved
so we have been getting a driveline thump at the top of 1st gear at WOT for some time now, we had adjusted the carrier bearing a few times to try and remedy it with limited sucess, we have shimmed the trans mount in several configurations with no sucess. finally when installing the new exh setup on friday we found the issue that had revealed itself.
dodge will not sell just the carrier bearing/mount separelty without buying a $1200 driveshaft. mercedes does however, we were unable to find a slk32 bearing/mount locally friday but after hours of looking thru the parts database and pulling parts up to compare we did find a clk setup that did fit for us.
i woudl feel a thumping under the center counsil at the top of 1st gear due to the 2 piece driveshaft not spinning straight.
check the attached pictures, the mount casing is supposed to be a circle :0

Re: Driveline thump solved
That makes sense.
This is a common problem on 2 piece driveshafts. Centrifugal force is always trying to make the driveshaft wobble, and to a certain minute degree, it always is.
Good find.......I think more than a few people are going to go out and check their driveshafts now!

Re: Driveline thump solved
That is very similar to the problem I had on my F250. It is the long bed with extended cab and has a two piece drive shaft with carrier bearing. The carrier was going bad and I didnt know it and it wore out the U joint on the shaft and it came apart while I was pulling a hill with my travel trailer. That was a pisser. But 4 wheel drive is good to have at a time like that.
Glad you found it.

A single-piece driveshaft would have two u-joints, one at the transmission and one at the differential.
The 2-piece driveshaft only has one u-joint, and the connections at the transmission and differential are basically just blocks of rubber.
As a piece of trivia, the blocks of rubber are called "Guibos"
