Wonder if you can replace the two piece with a one piece drive shaft. I did that on my '91 240SX and it made a huge difference in the way the car handles torque. I got mine for my 240 here...

Got a hold of that company and they said if we supplied them with a test shaft they could quote it and build a one piece setup. Anyone got a spare $1200 drive shaft sitting around??

Don't tell them our's costs $1200.
They'll base their price on it.

Tell them it's for a Chevy or Ford.

Yeah, I defiantly didn't tell them the cost. Don't want to shoot myself in the foot

They are located here...
The Drive Shaft Shop
1531 South Main Street
Salisbury, NC 28144

So if anyone lives close to there and wants to let them look at your drive shaft, we can get a quote on how much it will cost for a one piece. I don't know about you but I defiantly want a one piece, have felt the difference. No one mention to them that our shaft is $1200... lol

Once they see what it is going onto they will be able to find out what it costs to replace it. But they probably dont want to price themselves out of the job either. Good luck.

yeah that would be sweet!
I think they are the same people that make the driveshaft and axels for the S2000 to nissan rearend conversion good for 1000hp.

They are, this shop is WELL known in the Import scene. my shaft was their bottom end priced shaft and was rated for 650hp. I think I'm going to start another thread for this so i can get more attention on it and hopefully find someone in NC.

Cool thread. My 1963 Buick Special station wagon had a two-piece driveshaft with a "center bearing". In 1972 we drove if from upstate NY to Ft Lauderdale for spring break. On the way back, in central FL, it started thumping. My buddies flew back and I drove for 2 days at <40 mph to get it home. Then went out and bought the part for $20 and replaced it in my driveway. Had that old Buick another 6 months and drove it to 104k miles before upgrading to a '66 Skylark. Never liked 2-piece driveshafts since.

63 Buick Special 4 door. My first car! Also had problems with the two piece driveshaft. Did know much about cars back then and thought it was terminal. Sold the car to a junk yard when the Army reassigned me from the area (Jersey).

So how is the install of this part?

I looked under mine today and the bearing seemed fine, as did the rest of my drive shaft. Granted I wasn't on a lift, but I still saw no obvious problems. I figure it is either this or the shaft, and either way this replacement would be a good idea.

Just wondering what type of setup I will need to do it, since I am trying to move I am in an apartment and have no garage at the moment, so I have to find a place

to replace carrier bearing
car on hoist, drop the catback
remove heat shield
disconnect shaft at rear end
disconnect support bearing bracket
remove shaft, swap in new support bearing assembly, reinstall.

make note of the support bearing bolt locations on the frame before removing them as the bearing assemble bracket has slotted holes for adjustment.

Hey Goldwing, I was in Lauderdale for spring break in 1972 also. You didn't happen to see me in my AMX did ya? I had a 66 Buick Skylark GS a couple of years before.
Sorry for the thread hijack.

I took my car into the dealer and they found it to be one of my cutouts hitting the frame. I did some readjusting on my exhaust and haven't noticed any more thump. So I guess mine is ok for now. I sure wish someone would make a lightweight one piece though.

The Chrysler dealership is telling me that our carrier bearing is bad and needs replaced. The quote they gave me was $2100 "because it is all together and they can't just order the bearing". Is this something that could be handled at home or am I better off buying the part myself and having a shop do the work?

If you can handle it yourself, you will always be better off, both money and quality wise.
Many members here have replaced the center bearing themselves.
