Default Dreaded intercooler failure??

I thought I would be lucky and avoid this, but....

Drove to Hamilton ON this past weekend. About an hour out, going 75 mph with temperature in the 70s, I pushed the pedal to the floor and it dropped two gears to 5500 rpm and nothing else. A couple miles later I tried it again...same thing. Then again, and it responded like normal with lots of power.

Over the course of the weekend I discovered it would intermittently run normally and then run with no power. After a while I could detect when it cut out (the car seemed to surge ahead a little as the load of the supercharger went away) and then when it cut back in a few minutes later (the car shuddered and slowed slightly as the s/c re-engaged).

Sound like the intercooler / intake temp sensor / aux water pump for intercooler problem many have encountered???

Interesting thing is that the ambient temperature was consistently in the 60-70s and the water temperature ranged from a needle's width below to a needle's width above the center line. No indication the vehicle was running hot.

The IC pump going bad won't affect your engine coolant temp. Just the engaging of the supercharger. Buy a Johnsons and call it a day.

I read the suggestions for the Ford replacement. Still under warranty -- so I expect to get the first one for free before I have to lay out cash!

Free is good, be sure to print out the IC pump thread so they have a clue.

Brian Brave had a lead on a higher capacity pump that was similar to ours. Id suggest you pm him to see if he has gotten more of a handle on the pump and its benefits, and you can tell him Id like to know also. Enjoying it all, Woody

Pretty Sad feeling when the blower wont blow isn't it?
They will continue to work inadvertantly until the pump is replaced but when it comes to the time you have to pay for it go with the Johnson pump far superior to the Ford one in my opinion.
Mine is still under warranty but when mine went 6 months ago I chose to pay for the better choice rather than taking an inferior pump that will also go in a short time plus if you plan on doing any further "mods" you will need the extra volume the Johnson offers.

Update. The mechanic could not reproduce the problem yesterday so I told them to try again. The service manager drove today and "it" happened....his comment...."it really runs poorly without the s/c". He is contacting Chrysler engineering for options.

I did print out one of the better threads mentioning intercooler and intercooler temp sensor as the prime suspects, and he has that. Good thing I have two. I told them to keep it through next week as long as they fixed the problem.

if it happens next year, I'll be asking questions about the Johnson pump.

MINE TOO!!! Mine just went out yesterday. Eventually I will replace it with a Johnson not Jacobs pump that I have had for a while - it's the one that all the people with syclones/typhoons upgrade to. BUT... since my car is still under warranty I'll get the free one and for those who are also under warranty DON'T FORGET - you are entitled to a FREE RENAL CAR paid for by Chrysler

To get the free rental you have to make an appointment to take your car in - if you call early enough you can take it in the same day.

The car is back and they replaced the intercooler and intercooler temp sensor. The weather is a lot cooler now, but I'll be putting some miles on it to make sure it's fixed before I put her up for the winter. The warranty is over in March and there will still be snow on the ground. In another month, the SRT6 will be hibernating until at least April.
