Default garage door help

Can anybody offer help programming the remote door opener.
I have a Genie unit (American far as I know).
I bought it last year so it's not ancient.
I have no idea if mine uses rolling codes or not.

I've tried all the methods in the owners manual.
Haven't called the # yet but checked out the website and it wasn't helpful.

whats happening is this:
After doing the initial program steps, if I'm holding the car remote button and press the remote button that came with the garage door, the door won't open.
As soon as I let go the car remote button the garage door remote will open garage.
The car remote won't open the door by itself but it prevents the normal remote's signal from getting to the receiver on the opener.
Wierd. Am I on the right track? Is anybody else having trouble getting the car to take garage door remote programming?

Make sure to clear previous codes before programming.
Hold 2 outside buttons till lights flash.

Then re-program. (make sure to wait for the rapid flashing)

Also make sure you opener motor does not have the learn/smart button on the back - there is an added procedure.

i had trouble with this as well but in my owners manual i wasn't flipping to the next page to read all the directions. another culprit could be that you are not close enough to the garage door, pull the antenna wire and let it hang down as low as possible.

The garage door receiver may have a learn button, if it does, it rolls codes.
after you hold the remote too the car, you will have to press the learn button on the receiver, then press the button in the car.

My Homelink seems to have lost the programming. I went through the process twice where I cleared the codes, then held the remote next to the Homelink and pressed both. The Homelink light did its blinky thing but the garage door still won't open.

Do I then have 30 seconds to leap out of the car, climb the ladder, and push the "smart" button on the garage door opener?

try not even using the garage door remote.Push your learn button on the opener and then get in the car and hold down the button you want programmed in the crossfire. This drove me insane with my jeep but this method worked perfect

I have a genie opener also: Loosen the two screws and drop the light cover on the opener. The " learn" button the others referred to is to the left of the left hand light bulb. Mine worked after I discovered the button. Genie openers have used a rolling code for at least ten years. TBW

Just programed mine, pressed and cleared codes the 2 outside buttons on the councel, then pressed the button on the back of the opener unit, then pressed the one in the car and held it until the door opened. Works like a charm.

I had no problem programming mine. I just get out and lift the door and slide it to the top. There is that getting in and out thing that I havent been able to get out of the program though....
