Default SRT clutch noise - A/C or SC ???

I had first problem today that is puzzling. With hood up and engine cover off, when I turn on the A/C (normally it's on all the time here in FL) I hear a really ugly noise that sounds like it is coming from the Supercharger clutch on top and not from the A/C clutch down low. Turn A/C off and noise stops. When A/C is on, the engine fan comes on automatically creating some more under hood noise that sounds normal. Does anyone know if turning on the A/C also activates the SC clutch?

It does not. They’re not related, other than sharing a common drive belt.

Seems as if your A/C compressor or its mounts are in need of attention. The supercharger pulley bearing rarely fails before 50K miles.

So I was finishing up installing my LET Phenolic spacers and while the cover was off, I had another listen to the noise coming from the top of the engine. Definitely coming from the now "infamous" stock pulley on the front of the supercharger. Has anyone had a stock pulley go bad, as opposed to replacing good original with the Code 3 or LET pulley?

So engine is cold, idling (I am actually checking for air leaks in the air boxes from the spacer install). It appears that when I activate the A/C pump, that puts an additional load on the belt that makes the pulley noise 10 times worse, so I suspect a bad pulley as opposed to a bad SC clutch (or are these one in the same unit)?

I have 40K miles on the car and got an extended warranty. The dealer will only cover putting on a replacement stock pulley if this turns out to be the problem. Need a way for the warranty to pay for the new non-stock pulley.

Ah, okay.

The supercharger pulley bearing is a part within the supercharger pulley assembly. It’s readily replaceable, although seldom done by dealerships. They tend to replace the entire assembly.

Good luck.

That was a great video and the sound is exactly what I am hearing. THANKS! I love this forum and all the great information available.

So, I have a bad SC pulley bearing. Now the next question is how much $$$ to spend to get it fixed.... $35 or $700. Since the bearing ($35) is the major part within any after market pulley, I wonder why an after market replacement pulley is soooooo bloody expensive? If you think of all the engineering that goes into a modern day PC (~$500) and all the finely machined parts in the box, I can't understand why a simple pulley (without the main bearing piece we know cost $35) costs $650. Or why is that a lot of us have shelled out $80-$100 bucks for fifty cents worth of phenolic plastic. My company makes the plastic pellets that is sold to the auto industry and that sells for $1 a pound. Please don't get me wrong. I love well engineered stuff and don't mind paying a reasonable price. But someone please explain why a pulley should cost $700 and a PC $400? I know the first response to this question, so I'll save you the time; "You can't make a PC turn your SC".

Well the easiest answer is it is less of a hit then the $1200 pulley from renntech, YOU HAVE TO PAY TO PLAY, Brandon spent tons of hours making that pulley, perfecting it, and marketing it with a good ole I told you so, against all of the doubters (including me). Worth its weight in gold if you ask me, the guy continues to reinvent the wheel, I will be buying a bearing myself very shortly, and if I didnt have the renntech pulley i am sure I would have a code3 pulley. If I were you and had some spare ching I would not step foot into a dealer, SAVE $700, buy Brandon's pulley WITH THE BEARING already pressed, read list of instructions to do the easy install yourself, install it, and enjoy the ride and life that much more. You would be surprised what a little monster the SRT will turn into.

One word Volume.

How big is the market for these products?

Without a large market they need to charge a high price per unit to ensure they earn an adequate return.

If they could sell millions of units they could sell at a lower profit margin.
