The one that got away
The one that got away
All the chatter last weekend about SRT vrs N/A got me thinkin' "maybe I ought to walk in those shoes" You know, get an SRT for a while and speak of the comparison from experience. Many members, who have owned both, seemed to have survived the experience intact and while I have driven an SRT, I really haven't "lived" an SRT.
My local Chrysler Dodge dealer has had one for a while. Black on Black on Black roadster with only 675 miles. Dealer owner had it as his pleasure car in Florida where it spent most of the last three years in the condo's garage.
At 675 miles, it was a virgin. Tempting. They put it up on EBay. Must have known I would see it there as well as on my drive to work ( one of my back woods routes).
As it happened, I was in the neigborhood this evening so I stopped in. Just to look ya' know. As I walked to the car, Bam! I took a shot right in the common sense lobe. It had me to the quick. I circled the little beast and could just feel the heat, the vibration, the NEED for the speed it represented. Side by side, my SSB limited looked so listless and wimpy compared to the brute muscle of the shiny black painted beast.
During the heady walk to the showroom I made two quick mental calculations. Trade in barganing value of my '06 limited vrs a cash buy and/or keeping both cars. And, how I was going to convince Cathy (the brains of our outfit) that the purchase was a good idea. As I entered the showroom, one single salesman was there, on the phone. Patiently I waited as he finished his call..."Can I help you?' he asked.
I must have looked like a little kid standing outside a bathroom, desperately waiting to pee.
"I'm kinda interested in the SRT Crossfire." My heart was pounding, the droll was running down my face, I wanted that car, and he knew it. "we had that one up on EBay all week."
"Yeah?" I panted.
"I just sold it to a guy in California."
Probably a good outcome for me. Cathy would have been sorta upset. I know that she wouldn't have killed me. Far worse...
She would have said "NO!"

Back in 1969 we had 2 Volkswagon beetles, 1 sedan and 1 convertable. The convertable was my wifes car and a girley car at that. One morning I asked her if she wanted to swap cars for the day and she said sure. I called in sick and went to a car dealer that specialized in Corvettes. I traded her VW in on a 1968 427 Corvette roadster. When my wife got home that evening, she went back and forth between being pissed and elated it was a sight to behold. 39 years later I'm still hearing about it. My only defense was that I told her " Hey they're both blue convertables. What's the problem."

Re: The one that got away
Ya I feel your pain, I also have a limited roadster and have often thought about trading for a srt. I have not driven a srt knowing I'll want one even more. My problem is I've spent a lot of money on mods. and know it doesn't add any resale value. My wife would kill me if I told her I wanted a different car. My excuse for getting all the mods were "I'm keeping this car forever".
Re: The one that got away
I know a car purchase is emotional. I'm usually very meticulous and careful about spending this kind of money.
But this was Darth Vader's car!
I could feel the force, from the dark side. Resistance was futile.

I passed on a black SRT6 roadster in the Detroit area. I think it was an 05 with 20,000 miles on it. They were asking $27,500 for it. I got my 05 black roadster with 5,000 miles for $20,999. I know that the SRT6 is faster and may possibly be worth more in the future, but I really wanted a simpler car. Less maintainance. If money were no object I really would like my roadster and a black SRT6 coupe. Maybe someday.

They wanted $29K in March. I know it went for more than $24K.
I would have gone to $25K and Cathy would have worked the guy down a grand or got something added.
This dealer gives free oil change for life so that adds $1,500 over a 100m mile use cycle.
She is the best horse trader I ever met. I have no idea what she sees in me.

Guys, I was exposed not infected. I'm trying to fight it off.
This one teased me for 2 months and I managed to resist until the very last moment. Cathy is not encouraged by my compromised immune system.
You're not helping!

Re: The one that got away
That's probably both a good and bad thing. I don't think I need to explain. If you already have a crossy, I wouldn't risk the Mrs. putting herself on Lockdown for another one.
It would be easier to justify a "more" used coupe SRT. You can get one cheap and she might not make you sleep on the couch as long.

Well even the slightly used SRT6 Coupe Strategy didn't work for me!
You saw what happened, I bought it in late November (expecting to 'sell it to her' & sold it in early Feb to 'him' instead. She said, No, No & No! She "ain't driving no 'Sports car' for regular errands, & that's Final"!
Re: The one that got away
Franc, that's why I own 2, the '04 Coupe (STILL for sale!) & the blue animal in the driveway. I NEEDED the SRT & the wife thought (along with me as well) that the Coupe would be a quick sell. Que sera sera.......at the rate it's going we'll probably end up keeping both. The wife loves the '04.....that's the key, convince the Finance Minister of the Franc Household that it's a car she'd love to have & you're golden!

Here's your New strategy:
http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.js...2380005&dealer
A "New" (19 miles) 2006 Black, Black, Black Roadster in IL, (Yes that one!). It's an 'INVESTMENT' one of only (3) 2006 SRT6 Roadsters built? (All on 9-28-05 at 1200 hrs)
Tell her it will be worth it's weight (wait? ), in Gold someday.
Bill

I feel for you Franc.
When I was car hunting I drove quite a few - 350z, Boxster, S2000 . . . but once I saw & test drove the SRT, I was hooked.
Just don't do a throttle reset before the test drive or they'll up the price !!

I ain't sayin' a word about Cathy's weight. I'm trying to win the debate, remember.
Black on black is not my color. Like you I'm SSB. Truth is I would prefer an SSB or aero blue coupe like Kurts is driving.
But this one made me want it. It teased me. It double dog dared me. It was the car, not the colors. I tell you the force was strong with this one.
Like I said, shot me right in the "common sense" lobe.
Here is my new strategy. Instead of making weekly $5.00 payments on my retirement plan, I'm diverting it all to my SRT-6 plan. The clerk at the 7/11 will never know when he hands me back my lotto ticket.
Not a sure fire plan, but it's what I've got to work with. I can only hope that when it comes through, they have not all been taken out by deer and mountain sides.
