Sloppy transmission
Sloppy transmission
When I park on even a slight grade, once I let off the brake, the car will roll two to three inches in either direction. I would figure that a "built" tranny wouldn't have much play at all. It would be tight and solid. Anyine experience this? Think it's normal? Or now a sure way of telling a tranny is going bad or not? Cause I always smell this hot smell from my car (stock) once I park it. Just smells like hot metal, somewhat similar to when you go into a welding shop. Just not as strong. I am hard on it, but it's not overheating and all fluids check nominal.
I have no idea about either issue. Car has 6k on it.

Re: Sloppy transmission
All current automatic transmissions have a parking pawl (kind of like a pin) that engages a gear on the output shaft to stop motion. The car can have to roll forward or backward a bit so that it can engage...I would think you would have noticed this on all autmomatics...nothing wrong with the tranny based on it rolling a bit before the pawl can engage.

Re: Sloppy transmission
Also when you engage the parking pawl like that it makes it hard to take out of Park when you're ready to go. That's the reason I use the parking brake all the time. I am not saying it will damage the transmission by just shifting it into Park because it was designed to hold the weight of the car but that binding when you take it out of Park can't be good for it either. But that's just me.
Re: Sloppy transmission
Only thing with that pawl is that as far as the transmission is concerned "Park" and Neutral" are the same gear, only difference is that pawl. It's a pin that's about 1/8" in diameter that holdss your 3100lb car still. Best practice is to have foot on service brakes, engage the parking brake, then shift into "Park" so that pin sees as little shearing force as possible.

Re: Sloppy transmission
Is it something with the computer that makes it slip right out of the gate or fluid? I've hit it hard a few times out of the gate and had it slip. It feels like it goes right into neutral and have to stop, shift to park, and then drive again. First time it happened I thought I lost the tranny all together. It's tempting cause the SC isn't heat soaked and feels much faster than when hot.
