Default Good Drives

I've been dying to find some good twisty or fun roads for a good weekend or day of driving. A coworker friend of mine is heavily active on a Goldwing (he says "geezer glide") forum that has a wealth of information on great places to cruise. This collection has lead to a closer community and allowed lots of people to meet each other.

I think this forum could benefit from a collection of recommended routes for cruising, recreational driving or scenic views. If anyone can recommend any interesting drives, restaurants, or generally cool places to go in your crossfire, share your stories with the community.

I'll start:

I've enjoyed spending a day crusing down Route 66 here in Oklahoma. The road consists of mild hills and long sweepers. I still haven't seen any cops out there. (Probably because the speeders take I-44) I like to stop at "Pops" soda stand for an exotic bubbly beverage. I've been there three times now, and each time there have been at least a dozen classic, exotic, or rare vehicles.

Pops has the largest selection of "gourmet" soda I've ever seen. I was even able to buy a bottle of Moxie elixar that I haven't seen since I was in Maine.

Someone from the CTC group should add to this. There are some very nice roads to travel down in the Texas hill country..i.e. Lake Travis, Luckenbach, Fredericksburg to name a few places.

Well now, you could expand your map of "states the Crossfire has visited so far" by hopping on 44, heading east until St. Louis, hang a left on Illi. 55, drive north through the flatlands, get on Hwy. 39, drive through Wi & get your keister up to the Keweenaw peninsula of Michigan (the "tail" of the U.P.). Locate Hwy. 41, drive to Copper Harbor (where Hwy. 41 begins or ends, depends on your perspective) & then head on Hwy 26 south. You won't encounter scenery or twists & turns like it.

Just don't go yet otherwise the road looks like this:

I've driven to Tulsa (when Memorex/Telex still had a presence in the town) & loved the city. Great food, restaurants everywhere, downtown on a Sunday morning, the Arkansas R., it was all good. Only the water was below par.

I'll be taking my grandson on a little tour this summer. Portland, OR to Spokane, across the Idaho panhandle to Montana, across Montana to Devils Tower, WY, back across to Cody, down to Ft Laramie, then to Laramie into Loveland, CO. Then back to Wyoming and head west till I get back to the Ocean again. I sure there will be at least a few curves somewhere in there. Going to take the SRT Aero.

Bill, Where are you? Someone is asking about a twisty road to drive on. Don't you have something planned for some weekend in April?

I've always thought a Route 66 cruise would be fun. What better ride to do it in than an Xfire?

Here is a RIP Snorter!!

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=e...5&ie=UTF8&z=12

Exit Highway 101 at Westlake Village Blvd, then head west on Hwy 23 (Decker Canyon Road) doing the legal past three stop lights....

Then let her RIP - - 12 miles of hair pin turns; 2/3rd gear slap stickin' on new backtop, and when you crest the top of the hill, the pacific ocean with views of Catalina Island - - and if you have eagle eyes, the smaller Santa Barbara Island await you.

If yer lucky you might see a drunk Mel Gibson or Gary Busey....

Then just cruz PCH in one direction or the other and enjoy.

Head north and stop at Neptune's Net for a bite and see 100's of bikes..

OR head south to Venice Beach and watch the freak show...

Do you ever head up to Yakima and cross the Columbia River in Vantage? The Northwest is a diverse area geographically, there are great drives everywhere you look. I live in Wenatchee (middle of WA state). One of my favorite drives is to head east towards the small town of Quincy, then head south and hit I-90. That part has long straight aways and not many cops or traffic if you take the roads between the farm lands. I then follow I-90 west and cross the Columbia River at Vantage. There are some great views of the gorges the Columbia River created. From vantage I head west over some sloping hills that have long sweeping turns and high speeds. After that you stay on I-90 till just after Ellensburg and head north on 97. From there its all winding roads through forests till you get to SR 2 and head east back to Wenatchee. About a 2-3 hour trip with a little bit of everything.

BrianBrave is right, that's some drive. Especially for a flat lander from Ohio. Four others that I like are:

San Juan Skyway, From Durango Colorado through Silverton, Ouray, Telluride and return to Durango.

Always classic Pacific Coast Hwy. from Carmel California through Big Sur to Santa Barbara.

Interstate 10 out to Palm Springs California and through Joshua Tree National Park, up through the back side of the mountains to Big Bear Lake and on to Lake Arrowhead and down to San Bernardino.

Miami Florida to Key West through the Keys.

Don't we have a Great country? Driven in all of the states except Hawaii and Alaska, intend to do those two before I cash out. For a real challenge try the UK. I drove a VW Golf 1200 miles through England, Scotland and Wales. It took some time to get used to driving on the left side not the " wrong side". The roads were in much better condition than ours and the drivers were much better also. Much more considerate and polite.

SpaceManSpiff,
Have been to Wenatchee. Nice area. That sounds like a good drive. Lets try and get together and make the run. I live west of Portland so it would just be a good one day outing.

The CTC has taken some trips through Texas Hill Country with twisty turns and beautiful scenery. We will be going again on March 9 to Carlos "N" Charlies by Lake Travis. We've gone as far as Llano, Tx. Our trips have been documented in the South Forum for all to see. Our club holds a meeting and has a GTG/Road Trip at least once a month and attend a local cruise-in twice a month.
