Unhappy Frustrating Drag Strip Day!

Put my Needs Wings intake and pulley combo on yesterday afternoon, smooth install no problems, test drive 20 miles home from work, pulls hard! very noticeable improvement.
Been to the track twice with this car to get a baseline best stock et 13.16@105 last time out 13.3 soooo i'm expecting to rock the world with my new mods.
Today 83 degrees partly sunny first pass traction control on in drive 13.11@105 WTF! place is a mad house, 2 hours later second pass, car is cooler obviously, traction control on autostick pulled to the left (don't know if this has any bearing on things) 12.95@108, track was good and sticky, I wanted to get one final run with traction control off but some @sswipe oiled the track down! Hangin out at the track for 5.5 hours for these two runs...i'm more than a little frusrtated. The car seems to pull harder on the street than the track, track too sticky? if there is such a thing, to much strain kickin out the sc? I'm open to all observations, gonna try again maybe thurs. night.

What were your 60' times, both stock and with the NW and Pulley?

What size pulley did you install? I'm no drag racing ##'s expert, but with a 1.877 60 foot time you should have done better.

don't forget to let the car learn what you have done to it. Its going to take awhile for that ecu to fully adapt 20 miles wont do it in my opinion. Also get that ecu tuned.

Turn off the traction control next time!

That makes a rather large improvement on my car...really boggs it down if it is on, especially on the 1->2 shift.

Were those 60's on stock tires? Anything below a 2.0 on street tires is GREAT. I ran a 12.85 @109.4 with a 2.0 60' with my car at 2,100 ft above sea level with only SL55 complete intake. What were you launching at? What's the track elevation? What was the ambient temp. on your "before" runs? Did you launch in "D" or 1st/autostick? Traction control on? off? All of those (and more) combined have BIG effect on a cars times/traps.

I'm hoping thats what it is, the car only has 1,550 miles, it doesn't get driven enough! the pulleys are 178mm, I didn't think a computer tune was needed for the milder pulleys.

Stock tires, Bradenton Florida 83 degrees, I'm gonna go out thurs. night again, I tried a couple launches on the way home without the traction control and I can see where that may help.

A computer tune is not 'needed', but would help.

However, the car's computer will 'learn' the mods you have added and adjust accordingly. Some say this takes 500 miles or so.

I think your problem was the traction control.

Mopar - You sent me a PM sometime back and I don't remember if you were going to have K&N's installed with your SL55 intakes? Aren't you also getting the 185mm Pulley? - Man, your going to smoke.

What track do you run? - It's nearly impossible to run a 1/4 mile iin So Cal. They only have open "street legal" drags once a month and I hear your lucky to get two runs in.

If the track is near Vegas - would love to come out for a few runs...Never ran a 1/4 mile before.

PM me - sorry to hijack your thread JF.

BTW JF - I bet you run with the TC off and master the launch like Chi-Town - you will see decent times (and your PS2's are fresh) - you both have the same setup.

PM sent Brian.

As far as the launch goes you're not gonna get much better than a 1.8x 60' on stock wheels/tires. I believe; as mentioned by others, that the TC is definately your problem. ALWAYS race with traction control off...I turn mine off every time I get in the car as I like to be in control of my vehicle(s).

Thumbs up Re: Frustrating Drag Strip Day!

OK guys thanks for soothing my nerves, I'm gonna try again with traction control off, I was thinkin I had mechanical or supercharger clutch or i/c pump issues, but paranoia gets the best of me sometimes, speaking of which will reprogramming the computer show up if i ever go in for warranty issues?

Likelihood of warranty issues with an ECU tune are thin to none. It's the stealth mod of all mods.

There's no easy way to determine if a car is using the factory mapping or the kind of modified ECU map you'd be looking at. Even for a tuner staring at the paramters on a laptop, it takes a fair amount of experience to distinguish the factory map from a tuned ECU.

Intake and pulley mods are a different story. Maybe I'm paranoid, but I wouldn't put it past a tech to note an intake or pulley mod on the computer even if the car is only in for service. I've been holding off going down that road until the warranty has expired.

Did you double check the belt tension for slippage or binding after the shake-down run with the new pulley?

I agree - It would take to much work and most techs are going to follow the warranty book - if the repair book says re-flash; they just re-flash and you'll need to send your ECU back again.

It depends on your dealer - the service manager where I take my SRT in knows all of my mods and has no problems with bolt on mods.

Engine internals (cams, pistons) are another issue. He showed me the dealer installed CAI and header options that they offer for the new SRT8/10. I even remember them trying to sell me factory MOPAR headers and 3" exhaust upgrade when I purchased my new Dakota back in 95'

The biggest issue is racing. If Chrysler finds you've been to the track with your car... The warranty book even states that racing voids the warranty. Not sure when you show up at the track if they record your VIN or Plate #...

That bugs the hell out of me on a car designed to do just that...RACE.

Good baseline run. I'm just hoping I don't embarass myself and the car by running a 14. (I've never drag raced.)

Put a few hundred miles on it and try again. The car was still confused...

Yeah, but the likelyhood of that happening is slim. It does state that in the manual, but it also has a section of what oil and tire pressure to run during a "competition" driving...

Me thinks dey be cunfoosed...

We know for a FACT that the SRT Track Experience cars were sold to the public with full warranties still entact... Hypocrits I tell you.

Chrysler isn't the only one. Mitsubishi got some really bad press for snooping around some track day and club event results posted on an Evo forum site similar to this one, and then flagging the service computer to void their warranties. My dealer told me that they tried to hold the line on that for a month or two, then finally gave up and disavowed any knowledge when it generated too much heat.

For crying out loud, they rolled the Evo out to their dealerships in a dealer only no-speed limit track day event -- and how do you think those dealers sold it.
