Exclamation ESP Issues

I've started to notice my ESP kicking in on freeway on/off ramps. The first time I was kinda going quick but I didn't expect it to kick in. I was watching my dash ESP icon blink the whole way through the turn and I could feel the brakes engage in quick intervals through the turn as well.

This morning on my way to work I was going into another on ramp but at a much more civilized speed. The car felt weird again (the brakes being applied by the ESP) and the icon was flashing for a bit. I know for sure that there was no need for the ESP to engage.

My car is lowered and I just recently had to get a new set of rear tires (Damn Needswings intake!!!) but other than that nothing has changed on the car. I ended up going with the Goodyear Eagle F1s due to cost of the PS2s and availability.

Anyone have or notice similar behavior? The ESP/BAS warning light hasn't come on so I don't know if there really is a problem. I don't want to take my car into the dealer because more than likely they won't...

A: Be able to find a problem or replicate my experiences then
B. I'll get pi$sed, and
C: I'll be without my car for a few days.

This is just a theory as I don't know tons about the car, but maybe your steering angle sensor is going bad and when you go into a turn it either fails or displays incorrect information and the ESP kicks in. Just a theory, it doesn't seem too hard for the sensor to go bad, since mine supposed was throwing a code when I took it in a few weeks ago. Just a thought. I've never had the car brake in a turn though, ever.

Did you get stock size tires?

How's the inflation of the the tires? Did you check it with a known good gauge?

If directional, are all four tires mounted with the rotation orientation set up for going forward?

If the tires are still super-new (less than a few hundred miles) then then can still be a bit hard/slick.

Also, the PS2's really are pretty amazing in their ability to grip. Perhaps the difference in grip between your PS2's and goodyears (and your now mis-matched fronts ard rears) is enough that you are now discovering the reduced fun that comes with less capable tires.

(That pretty much exhausts my tire-related cause possibilities.)

They [PSIs] are to manufactures spec.

The rears are now directional and are mounted in the correct fashion.

Yes they are still quite new. I can still smell the rubber when I walk up to them. I do know that they are gripping better than the worn out PS2s though. There is some run off water on my way to work and I would constantly spin the [old] tires when leaving from that spot. I don't do that anymore.

That is what I am beginning to wonder. Only I think that since my PS2s in front are almost at the replacement point that it is those that are limited in the traction department. I've read somewhere that these cars have a tendency to push. I might have made that issue worse now by having more grip in the rear than the front. Every other car I have owned has been somewhat numb to tire selection. This thing is really sensitive! As a matter of fact the minute I took it from Discount Tire I could tell that there was something different about its handling.

Thanks for your insight guys bobo54545 & Display_Name!

my ESP kicked in when i was on an onramp but it was a nice curve and i was doing about 80...

I realy hate to post "THEORY" stuff, but in this case I will. I think that in lowering the car it may have effected the geometry of the suspention or the camber of the wheels so that the sensor(s) that control the ESP are preloaded. The new intake might also be adding additional g-force - maybe??

...the only reason I offer this theory is because I've seen a lot of things happen to a car when it gets lowered.

Interesting... I wonder where/how these sensors live/work?

Hey guys,

I was going to post a question about this same issue this evening. Beyond taking fuses out and have warning lights come on on the dash is there an electronic way, ie reprogramed computer to set the car up so that when the off button is pressed for the TC/ESP it really, no kidding, is off?

Mine kicked in this evening on the way home from work. I stopped off at a shop, pulled out and jumped on it a bit, just to get it a bit loose and the darn thing kick in and it was OFF.

Electronic Nannies, I hate 'em! It is the only thing about this car that I really hate. Everything else is Awesome!

Thanks,
KrzyFast
