Default Need Help

Planning on changing my oil this Sunday, but realized that this car is a bit different. I've changed the oil in all of my vehicles, but I've never done so on a high performance German vehicle. I tried to download the SRT-6 service manual, but it kept having errors. Can someone please give me a run down on how to change the oil and filter in this thing? Which side is best to jack the car up? What size wrenches are required? How do you change (special tools, etc.) and where is the oil filter located? Looks like there is a filter element vs. a standard/type filter. For those of you using FRAM, what is the number of the compatible filter you used? They have an extended guard filter for 7000 mile intervals. Any information is greatly appreciated.

In the SRT6 forum I posted a thread title First Oil Change on SRT6. I give you directions how to check your oil and reset the FSS. Now on to the physical part. The car has a little cover underneath, I'm a pretty slim guy and fit far enough under the car to remove the four bolts. Two are towards the front and two are towards the back. I did put a floor jack on the passenger side but didn't end up using it. I would say if you do need clearance lift up the drivers side just to drain all the oil out. This is from removing the oil plug that's located on the passenger side. The bolts holding the bottom cover are 8mm. The oil plug is a 14mm I believe. I left as much oil drain out from the bottom as possible, then I took off the oil filter cover. Now most here on the forum buy the topsider oil pumps. They pump the oil from the dipstick. I didn't want to bother and did it the old fashioned way. It was very quick as well. For the oil filter cover, I used an adjustable belt grip. I marked the oil filter cover with a sharpie first, to know how much to tighten when putting back on. Mine was pretty tight so it took some elbow grease to get loose. Some have said that it was only had tight. I did tighten my pretty good. Once you take it off, it's a big long filter and tube. Slide the old filter off and slide your new filter on. Since my car only had 1000 miles I didn't change the o-rings. There are 3 or 4 not sure. They are pretty obvious to see once you remove it from the motor. Once you do take it off, it releases pressure from your motor and more oil will drain out. I waited another 5 minutes to make sure all oil drained out and then put the plug back on. Make sure you have the copper washer that is on your drain plug. It can fall into your oil catchcan if you are not careful. I then put 8 quarts in and checked the car's oil level through the odometer. It came up OK and I was done. I also took a clean towel and dried up the oil in the area where the oil filter cover came out of. I poured the oil in the oil fill and not the opening of the oil filter cover. I also warmed up the car before changing the oil.
Should be pretty easy. Good Luck.

Thanks! This oil filter set up is much different than anything I've worked on yet! It's in the enging compartment on the driver's side isn't it?

There are lots of discussions about paper vs. fleece. FRAM has a synthetic media filter for our cars that is good for 7000 miles. Any recommendations? The dealers all tell me that I have to have a filter ordered if I want a factory one. I'd rather go get one from the store.

This is how I've changed my oil on Mercedes previously. Some on the MB and BMW forums have compared drain from bottom vs extracting from the top and the topside extraction removed more oil than draining.

Go with the manufacturer recommendation and save some time and effort.

You will see how easy it is to replace the filter once you do it. I don't drive mine much so I just used a $4 STP paper filter from Autozone. I figure I will change it out about every 6 months or 3000 miles. Heck I might change it out every 1000 miles. I think you have to consider a fleece one if you know you aren't going to change your filter often or don't want to worry about it for 7000 miles or more. I don't even think I'll keep my oil in that long. I will change my oil when it's dirty and that's what I'll use as a gauge. You should have a fun time. Knowing you saved all that money and didn't spend an extra $50 bucks on a topsider pump.

This is a little late but I thought some of you would like to look at this comparison of synthetic oils. I was surprised how poorly Mobil-1 did in the test.

Thanks!

Still confused about the part numbers. Seems like nobody knows for sure what the new filter is? Is it A00018026009 or a0001803109? Also, what is the corresponding Chrysler part number for the correct filter? Does the SRT6 use the same filter?
