First Oil Change on SRT-6
First Oil Change on SRT-6
Hey Forum,
My 2005 SRT-6 only has 1100 miles on it so far. I bought it with 211 miles back in August 07. I contemplated whether to change the oil or not at 1000 miles, and decided to go ahead with it. The car ran smoother after the oil change. Standard drain it out the bottom method. My local Autozone had the Mobil 1 0w-40 and an STP Oil Filter. The filter was like $4 bucks and the oil was $6.19 each. I had just missed a coupon for $4.99 each. It's a paper oil filter but I figure it's easy enough to change out more often. The mercedes one was sturdier. It only took 8 quarts to read ok on the odometer. I'm not sure how long the car sat before I bought it, but I wasn't impressed with how dirty the oil was. Here's a pic of the oil. It didn't even feel as smooth as the fresh mobil 1.

Re: First Oil Change on SRT-6
It doesn't look too terribly bad to me, especially for a 'new' car.
I would think that the oil in a new car has a little more trash and residue in it.
Glad to hear you found the oil.
I need to change mine, it's time! Did you have to 'tilt' the car to get all of the oil out, or is it made to drain well on its own?

It tells you how many miles until oil change.

Re: First Oil Change on SRT-6
While I do not have an SRT6, I too made my first oil change at just over 1000 miles which is the break in period stated in the owners manual. I like to rid my engine of any possible metal shavings or contaniments that may have been generated during the break in period.
My 2006 base coupe was purchased new in Aug. 07. After my oil change I did not reset the FSS an plan on making my next oil change when the light comes on.
On the few new cars that I have purchased, I have always made my first oil change soon after the break in period was exceeded. Its a habit that some of my buddies scoff at but I do not care. In my Crossfire's case the other factor was the length of time from the date of manufacture to my purchase.

Re: First Oil Change on SRT-6
When comparing the oil to fresh Mobil 1 it felt very different. Almost gritty. When I had purchased the car it was already showing the Service A wrench in the odometer display. When the dealer worked on the car, they reset the FSS. They felt with a couple of hundred miles that the oil should of been good. So it was reset. When I reset the FSS it went back to 7000 miles which is what the manual says it resets to. But because it was reset once, when I reset it the two wrenches Service B indicator showed up. I will reset it after a 100 miles or so and see if it goes back to a Service A one wrench. I'm assuming it alternates from one to another in intervals.
To check your FSS mileage left to Service A(one wrench) or Service B(two wrenches), turn your key to the on position and hit the left odometer button twice within one second and it will display the mileage and service required.
To reset the FSS, turn on your key to the on position, press the button twice within one second, then within 10 seconds turn off your key, then turn it on again while holding the same button as before for 10 seconds and shortly after that the present days or distance appears one more time, continue to hold the button then after 10 seconds, 7000 shows with the wrench or wrenches and also you hear a beep. Now it's reset.
To check the oil level, it basically the same as checking the FSS mileage. Turn on the key, then wait for an oil level icon and a clock icon to appear, when they do press the button twice and it will show you the oil level. One of the following messages will appear OK, -1.0 Q, -1.5 Q, -2.0 Q, HI. It's basically says your ok, low or hi.
Also I took off the oil filter with an adjustable rubber band type vise grip. It was on there very tight. No way to remove by hand. I marked it and when it went back on I didn't tighten it as much as it was before and still passed my mark by 1/2 inch. No leaks though.
