Default Transmission problem

Two different times when I was on the highway I floored the car to make a pass and both times when I let out the transmission completely lost all gears. It was like being in neutral. The only way to get it to go back into a gear was to pull over, stop and restart the car. Has anyone else experienced this?

Never heard of this one...it goes into neutral when you let off the gas???

I made my car 'skip' a shift one time...but it has never happened when just flooring it. I did it when using the auto-stick function.

You may want to check the fluid level. I know some of these cars have transmission leaks.

Otherwise, just hope your dealer can duplicate the problem.

The exact thing happened to me in my CF LTD and turning off the car is the only way to reset the transmission at that point. Took it into the dealer and they said it was a transmission leak, bad seal and bearing. Took about a week for them to correct the problem and everything was under warranty, even the free rental. Everything is fine now and no problems since the fix. Hope this helps.

Same thing happened to me in my '04 coupe, leaky gasket, fixed under warranty. I took My SRT6 for its last drive a week ago and put it away for winter. Yesterday I noticed a trail of fluid coming from under the car, sure enough its transmission fluid. It looks like the same problem my other car had. Glad I caught it before it before it acted up. Have to wait till spring to fix it though. This is a common problem and even has a TSB for it, TSB#21-002-05. You can find it with a search on this site. There is even an exact copy of directions that the dealer uses to fix the car somewhere on this site.

I thought about typing that right whenever I hit the 'submit' button, but I figured he would know that the dealer has to do it...

Good catch though!

Thanks for the replies. I`ve called the dealer and waiting on a call back for an appointment. They are giving me grief over the loaner car because I`m not the original owner. Normally I wouldn`t care but my daytona is in the body shop right now so losing another car would hurt. Hopefully when they call back everything will be set up and ready to go and a loaner will be available to me.

Thanks again folks. You people are great.

Get a hold of TodK and NeverEnough.

If I remember correctly, you are entitled to a loaner car IF your car is certified.

So, is it certified? I thought I remember you saying it was...could be wrong.

Anyway, do a search for NeverEnough's posts regarding warranty - he just did a nice long write-up to help inform us of our rights and our warranty details.

Sadly, most of the dealers don't even know their own warranty.

One question when floored it did it feel like it was going nowhere or was it just revving like it was in nuetral????? Cause I just had an issue with mine similar and found out it was the supercharger shutting off cause it was over heating and turning the car offf would give me my power back only for a few minutes....than would do the samething, and it felt like my cars tranny was done for but turns out he temp sensor and my ic pump were the issues I was having but while they were trying to figure out the problem I got a new supercharger out of it thinking that was the culprit>>>> but just tell me if the car was just revving up or just not going anywhere cause the blower shutting itself off..., if not your problem was the same as mine!!!!

I have an appointment to drop the car off thursday morning. They are going to address the transmission problem, the headlights fogging, a little flaking paint on 2 pieces of trim, the lost compass, a rattle from the rear deack/spoiler and they are going to have a loaner car ready for me. If this goes the way they are saying I will be treated real good. Of course it helps that my sister works in the main office at Chrysler and made a few phone calls for me.

And it is definately the transmission, not the SC. There are no forward gears at all when this happens.

Thanks again guys.

Keep us posted Jeff. I feel the transmission is fairly easy, and should be painless.

Just make sure they don't scuff up your car or your interior. Try to have it clean and make it known that your car is clean before handing the keys over. Good dealers should recognize a well cared for car and note it on their work order so their techs keep it in mind.

Did you have success with the tranny fix? I am new to the boards, and just bought my Xfire last week. Today, I went from 80mph to 100mph, and heard a chirp from the tires and Wammo.... NO gears!!! Totally embarrassing. Had to pull off the freeway and go back into park and then back into drive. The thing is, that I see no leak from my car whatsoever. Was yours leaking? Maybe mine is completely empty before I bought it and shows no signs of leaking. Keep me posted on what the dealer did for this problem. Thanks

They said the trans. fluid was low so they filled it and added dye. They said they didn`t see any leaks but the dye will help them locate one if there is one. I have tested it several times since I picked it up yesterday afternoon and so far the problem is gone.

They had to order the headlights, stereo, roof drip trim and some clips for the deck lid cover. When these parts come in next week I have to take the car back and have them all installed. And they are going to look for dye traces to see if there`s a transmission fluid leak at that time.

Mine did this just an hour ago. Kicked it to pass a car and when I let off the gas, I heard a clunk and all of a sudden no gears. I had to coast to a stop, but the gears came back without having to put it all the way in park (didn't get them until about 10 MPH). Is there any other information on this on the boards? Thanks,

Matthew

I took mine back last thursday and they had it all day to do all the repairs and they didn`t see any dye. I have no clue why the fluid would have been low without there being a leak. Have your fluid level cheked as soon as you can, matthewdavid. It`s probably low.

Thanks WrenchJeff. I wonder how common this issue is.

I had on 04 coupe with 20,000 miles that did it. I bought an SRT6 in May with 3000 miles and now it is leaking tranny fluid with only 7000 miles, so it must be pretty common. Im glad I noticed it on my SRT6 early, before any kind of malfunction.

Does anyone know how to get the cap off where you check the level and fill up the transmission fluid. Is there a special tool?

This is a quote from the Service Manager at the dealer I take my car to. This is his response to my tranny leak question if my car would be safe to drive to the dealer or have a tow truck pick it up.
"If these are very small drops (the size of a quarter or less) then it wont even register low on our special tool dipstick. A quarter of a cup of trans fluid will make a spot about 1.5 feet in diameter and that amount wouldn't effect the shifting."

So there is a special tool to check it. Also I asked if crossfires could be serviced at the MB dealer. The salesperson said they could. "Let me check on the options for servicing here and/or at the Mercedes store."

Mercedes said "NO", not for warranty work. They will work on them but it's out of pocket. I'll probably take my car in next week for the tranny repair.
