I just saw one like that at the track last night when I was racing my bike. It ran a mid 14. Not sure if something was wrong with it, or it was the driver, but his times were well below what I expected.

Congrats on your GTO purchase. A few weeks ago at the Chicagoland meet I would have never guessed you were about to trade in your SRT. It was nice meeting you at the dyno event also and hope to here from you occasionally here in the forum.

I seriously considered a GTO when shopping for my next car. The two deciding factors for me were handling and price...

I couldn't find a low mileage GTO for what I wanted to spend ($21K). And the two I drove (1 manual, 1 auto) didn't handle to my minimum standard and I didn't want to through money at the suspension straight off. I was also looking a '03 - '04 Cobras, but after driving one for a day I decided I would rather have a root canal everyday than drive an old body Mustang... The interior of them is TERRIBLE! And the Seats are the WORST EVER!

If you nee the extra space and aren't into road/autox racing then you probably made a good choice for your situation. I for one just LOVE tiny sports cars. I also currently own an S2000 and have had several RX-7s, a Miata, an SLK and a Z3 Coupe. It's all or nothing for me. I want tow purpose built sports cars and a Big Caddy in my garage.

 

Congrats, they are wonderful cars, I actually traded a '05 Cyclone Gray GTO in for my SRT-6. Pretty weird, same color GTO as yours and all.

I also owned a Scion tC, traded that for a SRT-4, which I traded for the GTO, which in turn got traded for the SRT-6. Seems like we have similar taste in cars.

Anyhow, I loved the GTO and honestly sometimes still think I made a mistake trading it in, but I do love the SRT-6. SRT-6 will probably get traded for a G8 in a year or two anyhow.

Completely different vehicles. GTO is alot more comfy and has a lot more luxury to it that's for sure! Have a blast with it, awesome that you found one with some nice mods already too!

GTO is about just as fast, has a WAY better aftermarket, but the handling is no where near that of the SRT-6 so it's a trade off.

www.ls2gto.com is a great forum BTW, make sure you turn the factory amps up (do a search for it on that forum, makes a WORLD of difference in sound)!

It makes no difference to me if people like or don't like my choice as it is exactly that, my choice.

For those that want to tell me how much better the SRT6 handles in comparison to the GTO, i agree. However, how many of those people out there have even taken advantage of the cornering capabilities of the SRT6? I have autox and road raced in the SRT6, I also did it in my previous SRT4... All that talk about handling kinda goes out the window with 90% (if not more) of you barely know the performance of the SRT6 first hand other then driving around to the market... remember, you're talking to one of those included in the 10% that actually went out there and did it.

Performance wise... from what i know, the SRT6 and the GTO stock for stock will be a drivers race if not the SRT6 edging things out a little... HOWEVER, the SRT6 does not come close to comparing when it comes to mods, and for very little money, you can get a GTO to be much faster. I've done the Road race and autox for the last 2 years just for fun and not taking it too serious, I was done with it since i know how quickly it can get expensive to replace tires, and brakes. Infact i destroyed my rear tires in 4 months with the SRT6 and the brakes took a beating when i road raced. I'm done with that.

Gary, it was nice to meet you too, I'll probably be around here just as much as before collecting local SRT6 owners, getting them to join my Chicagoland SRT Club.

Well, the GTO (Holden Monaro) is a good choice if all you want is a straight line, modern muscle car with a big lump of a pushrod engine (not a bad thing, my Buell has a big lump of a pushrod engine too). For all out class, performance, and sophistication, I'll take the SRT-6 any day!!

 

gto damn it is a nice car but I couldn't ever give up my baby.

 

I've had the GTO for almost a month now... I do miss the SRT6's handling, but the comfort of the GTO and the power make up for its flaw in the handling department.

I can live with the GTO much easier in a day to day situation then I could with the SRT6. I'm happy with the switch. Is it the last switch I make... probably not. Only time will tell.

When I was looking to trade in my 2003 Mustang Cobra I looked at the GTO but decided against it after doing extensive research on all the cars I was considering. If you go out on the GTO forums you will see a significant number of GTO owners complaining about their differentials failing. Good luck.

 

The front tires are shredding also. Rubbing on the front struts. GM should do a recall.

 

GM did a strut rub recall.

The differentials in the GTO is vastly superior to the CTSV diff and also on par with the diff in the corvette.

The GTO is a good quality car with vehicle specific quirks, and once those quirks are taken care of...one of the best vehicles you can buy period, and definitely the best bang for the buck vehicle currently available...where else for $25,000 bucks can you get a vehicle with 400 hp, a 6 spd, an interior to die for, and decent handling.

 

Kudos on the 6.0. I raced a 5.7 on route 66 from Tulsa to OKC and pulled slightly from 45 to 120 MPH. I even had the windows down and a passenger. I don't know if I was really faster than him, or if he was modded, didn't floor it, or what. Does anyone else have experience against one of the 5.7 GOATs?

 

You should be a little quicker than the 5.7, and even possibly quicker than a 6.0 with a bad driver mod.

They make a lot of power, sound awesome...but they are heavier and harder to launch with the manual. They are cool cars, no doubt - but comparing a GTO to an SRT-6 (or even a limited) is apples/oranges because they have completely different purposes and characteristics.

The GTO is definitely much more geared towards the typical 'american muscle' genre, where as the SRT is a corner carver with some OOMPH under the hood.

I agree with most of what you've said minus the "decent handling" its a boat... its fun to drive, but a boat none the less.

A buddy of mine got a has a 2006 6.0 6 speed GTO, he was lightly modded with a predator tune, and SLP catback... he dyno'ed 336 whp. I still had the SRT6 at that time, we both ran 13.1's @ 106 mph at track the same day, actually in the same lane. On the highway, from <60 mph on the highway, I would ever so slowly pull away, from >60 mph the GTO would instantly pull away a car length, and then it would hold from there until the end of the run.

 

The goat has decent handling. I have a '04 5.7 GTO, and I have a crossfire. I can pitch the goat into more corners than the crossfire, the fire roadster is more squirrelly than the goat. Just my opinion but I can jump from car to car and the goat just handles better to me.

 

Lol... then we have 2 different idea's on what "decent handling" is...

I have a '05 6.0 GTO and i had a SRT6... the GTO rolls and plows thru corners... the SRT carves and handles beautifully... If you have a none srt crossfire, then we aren't talking apples to apples as the SRT has a upgraded suspension from the base model crossfire.

I Autox'd and Road Raced the SRT6 in 100% stock form... I wouldn't even have that idea cross my mind for the GTO.
