Default Engine Reliabilty

Noob to the Crossfire. I am a car guy, so I have a fairly high understanding of most cars; however, I haven't been able to locate too much information regarding the solidity of the supercharged 3.2 liter engine as well as the trans. Anyone have any articles or information to share regarding the bullet-proof-ness of our engine and trans? How does it hold up to flogging and etc?

Supposedly pretty good. But if anybody blows up his engine I bet it will be fflores.

There's a guy on the MBworld forum who has over 130K. Plus I recall several posting 60K and up.

I would fully expect that the drivetrain of the SRT-6 will be VERY reliable as a whole. Mercedes Benz makes some of the most durable engines and transmissions out there. The transmission is actually the one that the Mclaren SLR uses (with a few tweaks), so that should be fine. I would expect that if any major part in the drivetrain where a weak link, it would be the rear diff. Now as far as the rest of the car is concerned, the electrical system and accessories are what will most likely prove to be problematic. I wouldn't be surprised to see these things start falling apart around the engine in about 10 years. The AC, Windows, air powered central locking etc. are what I predict will nickel and dime us to death in the future.

Good info AMG, I'll have to print this stuff out and add it to my never ending library of automotive knowledge. There were several key points in there that I didn't know, and I pride myself on knowing EVERYTHING about every car I own, and most that I don't. Thanks a bunch.

So far I love this car. Hopefully it will treat me well. Given some of that information you provided, I have no reason to believe that it won't.

though I definitely drink star kool-aid

my 600sl had a tranny replaced at 4,000k. That one went bad almost right away as well.
everything is fine now though.

'02. Didn't see a specific tranny mentioned in your intro...
and am no way disputing the content...
SRT-6 is a no-brainer.

...at service I just happened to mention that the shifter column felt "hotter" than normal.
They said they found metal shavings in it and needed to replace it.
- that's all I know.

If it would help you the 320 (R170) has been one of the 10 best engines for the last 4 years, why do you think mb uses it in so many cars.
