Default supercharger whine

Hey guys, I just test drove an srt-6 and loved it. One thing I noticed though, is that you can barely hear the supercharger whine. IS there any way to make it louder ? Considering it has a lysholm type supercharger, it should be really loud if its unmuffled. Thanks.

Ummm - I hear mine all the time. Pretty loud to me. I have a roadster though.

Well if you took all the baffling and venturies out of the intake, maybe sl 55 y-splitter to smooth things out on the intake, that should make it a tad louder. Also this is not a roots blower but the whipple/Lysholm blower, it has helical impellers instead of a straight edge, so this might cause less noise. It's definitely more efficient than a 6-71 style.

How about installing a microphone and connecting it to the stereo. JK.

I love the sound of a loud whining supercharger and was a little disappointed in how quite my SRT6's supercharger was. I'm a little more satisfied with it now after installing the Renntech kit that speeded up the supercharger, I'd say it's twice as loud as it was stock and makes me smile ear to ear.

I was going to ask you if that did make the sound more pronounced. Good to hear! (no pun intended).

It's doesn't sound like a Whipple on a SVT Cobra, but you can hear it over the exhaust. I use to visit the SVT Performance site and check out the vid's, man those '03 & '04 Cobra's are monsters.

yea i thought the whine would be as loud as it is in the '03 - '04 mustang cobra's since they have the same lysholm supercharger.

???

I always thought the SVT 2003 Cobra used an Eaton M112 unit... a roots-type blower. Those are the ones that give more of a whine from the factory. Same as on the Lightning. Some of the 80's-90's Thunderbirds used the M90... Ford has always been fond of the Roots blowers because of the cheap manufacturing costs. Efficiency is low with those types though, as they generate tons of heat. Ever see Lightings run several 1/4 mile runs in a row? There's almost always going to be a bag or two of ice laying around, to lay on top of and chill the blower in between runs.

Kenne Bell offers the blowzilla supercharger (twin-screw) for the '03 Cobra and that thing absolutely screams... whine is an understatement.

You do get a whirring noise. Real supercharger whine comes from the Gilmer drive pulleys and toothed belt.

This is true the '03 - '04 Cobra is an Eaton M112 I have a couple Buddy's back home that have them ooohhh I love the sound they make especially when they got a pulley pushing around 20 psi they are so loud. The Kenne Bell is not as loud as the Eaton the reason is less friction. The Eaton has lots of friction and tons of heat so when you switch to the Kenne Bell just running the same boost you have less knock retard, more horse power and less noise. I had a Grand Prix GTP it had an M90 on it I got it to be pretty loud I put a K&N cone filter on and it made a world of difference and also getting a smaller pulley will help a lot I ran 17.5 psi and it sounded a little louder than a cobra stock.

Speaking of SC whine - Just noticed a guy at work has a new Mustang Shelby GT500.
Wonder what it sounds like? I'll have to track him down and find out.

If you want to know what it sounds like inside, in the movie "I am Legend" Will Smith pushes one through the gears.
