Default trans banging when first taking off ?

Was wondering is anybody feeling like the trans slips, then bangs when taking off from a stop. Like sitting at a light and then take off light acceleration my SRT6 feels like the trans hesitates and then bangs into gear. Not a hard shift or real bang but you can feel it, like torque converter locking up or something. do these trannys have a stall type converter? I know they shift different than the regular xf. The trans goes through all the gears just fine no slipping no hard shifts, so I was wondering is this normal or just I might have a problem. I know you can't check the trans fluid yourself, could it be low on fluid? Its been doing it ever since I bought the car, so I am use to it and have that 7/70,000 drivetrain warranty, so I not real worried about blowing up the trans, but would like to see what is going on.

Thanks, Kevin

Don't count on the 7/70. I may be mistaken but the SRT6 is only covered 3/36. Read the fine print... BTW, haven't had the problem you are describing.
I'm at 9,500 miles.

Unless you bought the extended warranty it is only 3/36. All srt, 4, 6 and 8 only have 3/36, the reason is they are treated as race cars and have less warranty.

It shouldn't do that... Check the fluid and if it's OK in amount and color, take it in for service. SRT's only have 3/36,000 coverage unless you opt for the 7/70 package that they offer on new purchases (for an extra cost of course). Also note that some hesitation in acceleration has been found to be caused by the auxiliary cooling unit for the supercharger. Check the links here for the symptoms... If the problem happens when the engine is warm vs all the time, then it could be the supercharger auxiliary cooling unit (supercharger gets too hot, shuts off, lack of performance on acceleration results). The supercharger auxiliary cooling unit doesn't cause trans "banging" though. So, it still seems to be drivetrain related.

YES! Mine does the same thing! Always from a stop. I don't hear it as much as I feel the clunk as if it has a slight hesitation then it engages with a thud. My service guy says he doesn't notice it. It didn't do it on the Limited I had. This has been going on since I had the car new. Please let post your findings if there is a resolution.

thanks for cluing me in on the 3/36 drivetrain warranty that sucks!!! how do you check the trans fluid level when there is no dip stick in the filler tube? also I think the problem may be like a broken trans mount or even maybe a engine mount it seems like when brake torquing and let off the accelerator pedal it has a bang like the engine coming back down on the mount. has anybody had this problem of trans or engine mounts? and was also wondering if a mercedes benz dealer would be better to fix something like this rather than the chrysler dealer. and yes GOODMAN, I will send you something as soon as I find out with mine and yes my '04 limited did not do it either, and been doing it since I bought mine too I only have 3,500 miles so far, so we will see. thanks for the feedback.

Any new news on the fix? I think mine might be doing it now as well.

Kevin,

I would think that the transmission fluid is low. Take it to the dealer
and have them check it. Also, if it has not been done, have them check
for the transmission seal leak that others have had. It is a service bulletin
issue, so it won't cost you anything.

Mine feels the same way, but I do believe this cars do have stall converter. I don't know at what RPM it will bang in gear.

As someone that had the TCM (transmission control module) replaced, your might want to have them look at this as well.

Mine does the same thing. It feels like it can't quite go into first and just goes to second, then drops back down. It is very hard to describe. I have taken it to the dealer more than 4 times to fix and this past summer they replaced the entire transmission (under warrenty), but it still does it.

Mine too has an odd behavior when it is cold. I can actually hear what sounds like a turbo blow off valve when it shifts from 2nd to 3rd but only when I kinda stab the throttle right before it shifts. When it is all warmed up though it works fine. I purchased an extended warrenty from my Credit Union, who financed me, that allows me to take it to any ASE certified mechanic, so pretty much I am going to be taking mine into Mercedes for any work that needs to be done.

As for the transmissions using a stall converter the correct term is torque converter. Each torque converter has a "stall" rating. On most passenger cars the stall is right around 1,300 rpm plus or minus. There are unique torque converters out there that have a switch pitch which means that you have your standard 1,300 rpm for normal street driving but you can hit a switch and the stall increases to say 2,500 rpms for drag type racing.

Was a diagnosis or fix ever found for this symptom on an SRT6? It is happening to my car. Fyi, the diff is now a wavetrac and it still happens.

I seem to recall a similar sound/effect before I realised I had a broken engine mount. I'd definitely get under, look for any fluid staining and tick that box off.
Had the tranny mount changed when the engine mounts were done, no more mysterious clunks on take off now.

An easy way to see if it's your engine mount (while driving) is to watch the shifter during hard acceleration - if it pulls forward, most likely your left engine mount is gone.
Another (and better) way to check is:

Hood up
E-brake set
All clear in front of the car
Hold the foot brake
Car in drive
GENTLY apply some throttle and watch the left side of the engine (kinda looking through the steering wheel and under the hood)
If the mount is shot, once you apply enough throttle you'll see the engine "jump" on that side with the torque

Again - if you do this, please take all safety precautions to make sure the car does not take off unexpectedly.

thanks for this...so, my shifter is dead solid, so I doubt it's an engine mount. The lag/feeling got much less after doing a throttle reset. I wonder if it's just the nature of the beast.

for a year my roadster had a clunk in it as I took off, several us raised it up and looked it over well, found nothing. last month as I peeled out from a dinner with the group, my cvc joint on the passenger side broke.
my new half axle cam in damaged. so waiting...
