Default Dash lights just went out, strange constant clicking sound behind dash

The electrical system on this car is an absolute nightmare.

Today I went to enter my parking garage and I flipped on my headlights. I noticed a clicking sound, like something was grinding away behind my dash board directly behind the console. The interior dash lights won't come on.

I have no other electrical problems, all headlights, turn signals and tail lights work fine, as do all of the interior electronics.

I know these cars are prone to electrical problems from hell. When I turn off my headlights, the horrible clicking sound continues. In fact, when I remove the key from the ignition, close the door, and try to lock it with the remote, nothing happens. Clicking sound behind the dash continues even with the car off, key removed, and door locked. At this point I'm concerned about electrical fires.

Anyone have any idea what part of the electrical system will need replacing this time around? God it has just 50,000kms on it! What a disappointment.

Problem fixed via an ECU reset. Back on the road!

Glad to hear you have solved the problem. Please explain procedure for "ECU" reset. Thanks........

I took Rudy's advice and I unplugged the negative battery terminal for 10 minutes. Then before re-attaching it, I turned the key to the "on position" then back off. Then I re-connected the negative terminal, and my dashboard lit right back up and the noise went away.

Rudy, or who ever may know, I'd be interested in what is accomplished by turning the key to the "on position" with the negative battery lead disconnected.

Is this some sort of sequence that plays into a reset of some sorts.

I'm thinking with the neg lead off, there is no juice anywhere to the electronics, so what's the purpose (unless it drains a capacitor or something like that...)...

Thanx...

I'm interested in this too, I know what the throttle reset does but what/why reset the ecu? Benifits??

Turning the key depletes any charge left in the capacitors of the ecu or other electrical loads. Your trying to energize a disconnected circuit, and thus pull out all charge left in system, that was not already drained away. Woody
