What car are you going to put that oil in?

It is the wrong viscosity and not the recommended Mobile1, I was just curious. Have you been running this type/weight of oil for long?

There are quite a few 5w40s on the Mercedes 229.3/229.5 spec list, so I doubt it's going to be an issue as long as it's formulated properly.

The Mobil1 thing is a US marketing partnership - Mercedes don't recommend Mobil1 in Europe and as a matter of fact I'm not even sure it's widely distributed there.

The only Castrol 5w40 I've ever seen is Diesel Formula which is probably wrong (doesn't meet 229.3, last I checked), but maybe there's another one which works.

This has been discussed to death elsewhere on the forum anyway...

Yes, 3 years now. I know the Mobil 1 0w -40 is "recommended". Going to a 5w-40 with the high humidity & high temps in the south is no concern to me whatsoever. Call me cynical, but just because exxon/mobil has a financial arrangement with Mercedes Benz to "recommend" their oil, doesn't mean I'm using it. Personally, I don't do business with exxon, don't buy their gas, don't buy their oil. I did notice the new Pennzoil Ultra european formula oil is 5w-40 . I'd bet the house Pennzoil pays Ferrari to "recommend" Pennzoil Ultra as well. Just my 2cents worth sinced you asked.

The castrol I posted the sale about is the fully synthetic oil. No salesman is going to convince me that any of these synthetic oils is dramatically better than the others. Gotta think with your dipstick man!!

Having went to school years ago with a friend turned engineer for Mobil...I will stick to my Mobil 1...he was testing this stuff when we were in our 20's...pulling oil samples and such...long time ago...it has worked for me...and all my engines over the years were spotless when we had the heads of...the worst I every experienced was Kendall, with Pennsoil coming in a close second...a lot of crude floating around in the bottom of the oil pan....each to their own....

God I love it when people post up that Mobil 1 is the only oil that should ever enter the Crossfire motor.

You are wrong.

In fact, here's the list of engine oils that meed the MB 229.3 spec, direct from Mercedes Benz:

Mercedes-Benz Betriebsstoff-Vorschriften: Motoröl, Getriebeöl, ATF, Kühlmittel, Bremsflüssigkeiten

Holy Crap!
There are other oils other than Mobil 1 on there!
In fact, there are so many grades of oil OTHER than 0W-40!

In fact, there are oils that are 5W-30 that meet the spec, according to MB.
OMG!!

Here's the link for the 229.5 oils, while I'm at it.

Mercedes-Benz Specifications for Operating Fluids: Engine Oil, Gear Oil, ATF, Coolant, Brakefluid

Most of the oils on these two lists are European companies, which makes sense, since MB is a European based company. Quite a few flavors that you can get here in the US, too.

So many oils, so little time.

BC.

Started the thread just to alert those interested on a good deal on a good synthetic oil. Noticed the Purdue logo from boilerupxfire. Even though I am loyal to my LSU, Purdue produced my hero DREW BREES. Geaux SAINTS!!

I am a Colt's guy, but was cheering for the Saints because of ole Drew, what a great QB.

And as I said, I was just curious, not trying to be a ball buster like BC. Thanks for rehashing the oil standard info I have read 10 times, and with such a condescending tone to boot

You should be proud of Drew !, I don't know if the rest of the country realizes what a star he is here in New Orleans. Not just for leading us to a super bowl win, but what he does for kids in the city, and the city as a whole. My sister and her son lost EVERYTHING in hurricane Katrina. The Drew Brees foundation had a special day at the Saints facility a few years ago and gave away hundreds of new bicycles to katrina victims. My 8 yr old nephew received a new bike and got to meet Drew. If you haven't read his book, you should, it is a very good read, especially for a football fan. Drew put a lot of pressure on himself on and off the field...and lives up to it.

Thanks for the tip, I will pick up that book for sure. Since his days at PU, I have always thought he was a pretty good person, while attending, he volunteered and helped out with childrens organizations a lot more than many other college players. I knew he did a lot for NO after Katrina, but I had no idea it went that far. I guess that comercial I see on TV with him walking through NO and talking to everyone and being treated like a king and an old friend at the same time are true

I saw the pictures you posted of your wreck, man are you lucky to be with us still ! In 1982 I was hit from behind by a drunk driver, I was in a 80 mercedes 300D, the guy who hit me was in a chevy. He totally destroyed my car, the trunk was pushed all the way to the back seat. The front was crunched from where I hit the guard rail, but the passenger compartment stayed true and saved my life and my wifes life. We had to pry the blood soaked drunk driver out of his completely destroyed car. Its awesome to see how well mercedes engineers their vehicles. I wonder how my roadster's front pillar would hold in a flip-over, hope I never find out first hand. Anyway, glad you survived and found another Crossfire!

When I enquired on the cost of Mobile Syn 0W40 at the Chrysler dealer - they advised that Chrysler has modified their recommended oil to now be Mobil 1 Synth 5W40. That was last week in Michigan. I will confirm with Chrylser Customer Care in both Canada and US and post here.
