Thumbs down Engine Low oil Light...

  • As WE all know one of the items to be done on a 7000 mile inspection was change the oil and oil filter. I had this done last week at the Dodge-Chrysler dealership where I bought the car.
When I drove home, after the oil change was done, the oil low light came on. I stopped the car and turned the engine off. I waited a few minutes and restarted the car. The light was off. I drove a few hundred feet and the light came back on. I stopped again, turned the engine off and called the service department. I told them about the problem and they advised me to turn around and drive the car back to the dealership, which I did. The light came back on and it stayed all the way to your dealership. I left the car running so they could see the light was on. I had suggested taking the car for a test drive. A few minutes later the mechanic and I took it for a test drive. The light did not came on. I asked the mechanic if he could hook up the computer to see if there was a oil low light fault in the computers memory. He agreed to do that and no faults were recorded. So I drove off and when I went over the first speed bump the light came back on. I turned around and drove the car back to your dealership. I told them the light low oil light came on again and was advised that it could be a lose connector. I made an appointment for Friday to get that problem fixed. I drove the car home on another route. The light never came on again. I parked the car in my garage. A few hours later I reset the maintenance interval meter on the dash board...The mechanic had tried to do it but did not know how so I told him I will do it at home....
As WE all know you can check the oil level inside the car without taking the dipstick out. (The car came with no owner's manual so I learned on the go) I checked this oil indicator on the dashboard and got a -2.0 reading. This indicated 2 quarts of oil BELOW the MAX! Thinking the meter was wrong I checked the dipstick and to my horror I could see the engine oil was on MINIMUM....! I checked my bill and found that 6 quarts were added. I went online and found that a Crossfire needs 8.5 quarts of oil. The car was 2.5 below it's recommended level..!
I called the service manager and he agreed, on my suggestion, that a mechanic should come to my house and put 2.5 quarts of oil in my engine as I was not going to drive the car until the problem was fixed. A few hours later this was done....

What a nightmare.... I still wake up at night in sweat after blowing up the engine in my dreams!

Pete

The very first thing I would always check is the oil level in this situation.
The dealers don't know enough to be trusted.
Glad you didn't do damage to the engine.
I think the dealer owes you a full refund for there mistake.

If they offer a free oil change next time ya come in , tell them no thanks.

As I read your story...and then reread it...I never once saw the words "checked dipstick".

I hope you just omitted this basic step. It's obvious the dealership did!

The car was sold to me with 7270 miles on it. While visiting the Chrysler web site I found out that a Crossfire needs it's first maintenance schedule at 7000 miles. After a few phone calls to the sales person I was told that the recommended 7000 miles maintenance was never preformed. I would not accept that when I buy a car I need to drive it out of the showroom , to the service area , get it serviced and be expected to pay for this. I talked to the sales manager and they agreed that the 7000 mile service would be of no charge to me.

Pete, I guess my question is this.......If you knew all of this, why in the world would you continue to drive the car with a low oil light without checking it?

Shame on that dealer! D.I.Y. Its so easy (and cheaper unless they are giving you free oil changes) and you aren't gonna mess up. Another reason I try and keep my car out of dealer service.

It was my first time I drove that car after the car was driven by me from the dealer to my home. I knew it was an oil warning ..low pressure?? I did not know it was an indication of low oil! When I first phoned they talked to the mechanic who had put the oil in. The mechanic told them he had added the oil and checked the dipstick and it was up to it's level. They told me on the phone that the light must be reset and it was no problem to drive the 2 miles back to their dealership....

Unbelievable!
Then again if I hadn't been a member of this forum I probably would do an oil change expecting to put maybe five quarts into the car.
Good thing I did my research!
This forum is awesome!

Buy a set of ramps and do it yourself, it is an easy car to work on.

Well if you were only two quarts low you had more than enough to drive back to the dealer with. There's only about a quart running through the engine at one time. The other seven are there so oil changes can be extended. Remember the low oil light does not signify low oil pressure.

Stupid me I guess, but how did you check the oil without using the dipstick?

KAYBAR - Not to make this dealer nightmare any worse, but are you sure they used Mobil 1 0W-40 synthetic oil?

If they didn't know how many quarts your car needed, there's a good chance they may have put regular 5W or 10W-30 oil in it.

Worth a check, and may be time to switch dealers.

As ignorant as the service tech seems, make dam sure that he used the proper oil when he supposedly changed your oil.It wouldnt be the 1st time some dipship service tech just grabs some 5w30 and puts it in.I agree with everybody else, when it comes to oil changes- DIY.-------------------------Dave

If you have an Owners Manual it is spelled out. You press the little ***** in the instrument cluster in the right comination.

If you don't have one, you can downloasd one to your computer here:

Thanks. I've read the manual (really) and never caught up with that. Thanks again,

...When we did the test drive I asked him if he had put Mobil 1 0-40W in it and he told me he had... I know no guarantee... When the other technician came to my house he had 3 quarts of Mobil 1 0-40W I still have the empty 2 containers and a 1/2 full one. At that time I had my story down to paper of all the events of the day on the bottom I asked the technician to date and sign the paper and he added in his own handwriting that he had added 2 1/2 quarts of 0-40W to my car's engine...

..On top of this I found out myself that there is still a recall open for my car dating back to January 06 with regards to the cooling fan... I specifically asked the sales person when we bought the car if the car had any recalls open and he told me no!.. Another chapter to this saga!!

...I have only driven the car 120 miles and I already have a folder full of paperwork on the Crossfire...

Of all the dealer issues, fortunately your's is the most benign. I would think they'd be falling over backwards to make things right for you, including the radiator fan recall.

It's amazing they got the Mobil1 right and the quantity wrong. My dealer changes the oil for $20 (customer special) as long as I provide the synthetic (the deal is for dinosaur grade oil). The first time I went over with 5W-40 since it was easier to find and they refused due to potential warranty issues. So now I bring them only 0W-40.

When I purchased my SRT6, I had them verify the oil change and, as suspected, it was pure dinosaur. So as part of the deal they replaced the brand new oil with 0W-40. But I had to pull both my roadster and the SRT6 manuals out to show the dealer the requirement.
