Auto Stick questions
Auto Stick questions
I dream of the strangest things. I dreamed last nite I had an auto-stick and it didn't shift like I thought. Anyway, for you all with the auto tranny, when you use the manual mode, and are like in second gear, can you bounce off the rev limiter, or does it shift up to the next gear? Also, if going hard into a turn, and are slowing down, can you brake and tap the shift lever down like maybe two gears and use engine braking, like in 4th gear and tap twice to go to second, will the tranny go right to second, or does it go from 4th, 3rd, then 2nd? When tapping the gear selector up or down, are the shifts instant? Ok, I think that was all my questions from my dream last nite! Thanks.
Re: Auto Stick questions
From my experience, you tap once to go down one gear. You can tap twice to go down two gears. If you hold the shifter over for a moment, the transmission will shift down to the lowest possible gear without over revving. It will not bounce off rev limiter, it will automatically shift to the next highest gear when you hit redline. You don't have to worry about up shifts, it takes care of that for you as long as your right foot is flat on the floor....
The auto stick works very well!

Re: Auto Stick questions
Tranny will shift on it's own when you are in manual mode. While in manual mode the trans will tend to keep the gear you have selected until it decides it's time to shift.
Yes you can downshift but again, the trans will decide when it's safe to do so. For instance, if you are going 100mph and toggle into 1st gear the trans will proceed to downshift one gear at a time when rpm's reach an allowable level. This keeps your car from killing its self!
Found out yesterday that if you hold the shift lever to the left rather than toggle it through the gears, the tranny will downshift gear by gear automatically!
You need to get out more! I usually dream of chicks (the wingless kind)!

Re: Auto Stick questions
I've found this to be true with my car, I can't speak for everyone else. There seems to be two modes the Auto-Stick operates within.
First mode, if you bump the shifter to down-shift this will allow you to hit the rev-limiter in the selected gear and the engine will back down. Bumping the stick also allows you to drop to the next lower gear than what the "smart transmission" thinks it should be in.
The second mode, grabbing the shifter and holding it steady to the left, the "smart tranny" takes over, selects the proper gear then shifts to the next higher gear once the engine hits redline.
Again, this is what I've experienced through some unintended experimentation.
These cars are smarter than most of the folks that drive them !!!
I include myself in that statement !

Re: Auto Stick questions
Non auto-stick drivers can simulate this in another car with an auto trans, by putting the car in L2 L3 etc...I have been doing this my whole life in all of the auto vehicles I have owned. My Dad taught that trick to me when I was a kid well before I started to drive, so the auto-stick comes naturaly to me.
I don't mind up-shifting manually, but after down-shifting to 1 at a stop, I will put it in 2, and the the auto control the 1-2 shift, it does a better job than I can. Other than that it's nice to be able to put it in Drive sometimes for hands-free shifting, I only wish that the auto trans's would down shift more on its own. I like saving the brakes and reducing brake dust on the wheels. Also even in Drive, I can controll the up-shift prety well just with the throttle.
Another thing is the auto stick selection is 1) just a request to the computer and 2) acts only as a limiter.
So for example if you have the selector at 3, and come to a stop, you will start in first gear, the selector will still say 3, it will go through 2, and to 3 like it was an auto-trans. Then it will stay in 3 until either you change the gear, or hit the red-line.

Re: Auto Stick questions
I have found that it is TOOOO easy to get it to hit the rev-limiter and nose dive the car. When going 25-30 or so and tapping the stick left two times to get into the lowest possible gear (most likely 1st) and right after the second tap flooring the gas. The upshift at redline will be missed and the rev-limiter closes down the power. This is disturbing because the only time I do this is when trying to accelerate AQAP. Just flooring it is sometimes too slow to react or it only downshifts 1 gear. Seems like the smart transmission allows it to go into a lower gear than it can react to if too close to the redline when upshift is needed.
Re: Auto Stick questions
Hello, I am considering the purchase of a roadster and have several questions, each of which may appear stupid, but they are not meant to be. Perhaps you can help.
1. The car has an automatic transmission. Is this the same as an autostick? If not, what is the difference between the two?
2. I have never owned a black car. This one is black. What are the advantages and disadvantages of black cars?
3. The interior is "cedar" which looks a bit odd. Same question on the interior color. Would it be better to wait on a different color combination?
Thanks,

2. Black is a great color if you like to clean and polish (and are good at it) Highly recommend indoor parking, outside parking is almost a guarantee you will always have a dirty looking car. Scratches and swirls show the worst on black....and it is still my favorite on almost any car.
I have two other black vehicles and I refused to have a third so I went with graphite which is a nice alternative.
3. Personally, the cedar interior is iffy. Sometimes I think it looks great other times I think it looks very "orange". Sun fading maybe? I do not like the look on the steering wheel but like it on the seats and door panels. Very personal choice.
Re: Auto Stick questions
Thanks for your help 70GT6. I have another question: If I get a Crossfire, it will be new from a dealer. Are there any precautions I should make, such as insist that certain things be checked, etc. by the dealer, since any new Crossfire will be at least 11 months old. Others may be older and will have been sitting around for awhile. Thanks. Will have to figure out how to add the things in the lower left hand corner.

Re: Auto Stick questions
Get the VIN and check it yourself at Chrysler.com for any missed service bulletins.
An oil change would be nice _make sure they use Synthetic 0w-40 (Mobil1)
also if it is new make sure you have in writing that you get the lifetime drivetrain warranty - they should give this on any new '06 to '08. If they say it is "used" due to age they make them certify it so you get the warranty.

1) firewall the throttle; this causes the auto trans to downshift to handle the added thrust and torque.
2) If necessary tap down one gear (left); at 25-30 this will want to put me in 1st, but after the auto shift to 2nd there is no need. I wish I could at this pont contol when it goes into 3rd, but is I was in any other gear other than 2nd when this happend, I am screwed.
Here is what I have discovered; I hit left twice then right (before I stand the car on it's nose, and launch my wife) This puts me in 2nd with no change of gear allowing me to control when I shift to 3rd.
So the answer is to floor it, and do a quick double left and a right.
I have trained myself to do this to set the car manually to whatever gear I am in. Try it it works, but takes some training to do quick enough without actually shifting
