Question about cold air intake...
Question about cold air intake...
I have a question regarding the modified cold air intakes that I see posted on this forum. The ones I am refering to are the ones with the round cone filters in the engine bay. Although it looks nice, would this not defeat the purpose since it is sucking in hot air from the engine bay? I would think that the stock design of the intakes are more accurate as cold air intakes since it sucks in cold air from the front grill of the car instead of the hot engine bay...What are your thoughts?
Re: Question about cold air intake...
In front of the radiator area is best for cooler air but it does not flow as much using the stock size hole so there is a trade off with either set up. I believe the free flowing intake will make more power rather than being choked out through a very small cut out to go in front of the radiator. There are several opinions on ths topic so it all depends on your preference is etc. Needswings has a nice set up if you want to go through the front.

Re: Question about cold air intake...
Properly built CAIs use lengths and diameters of intake tubing that ensure maximum airflow into the cylinders across the entire rpm range of the engine ( not just in some RPM bands). Placing the inlet outside of the engine bay, while probably allowing cooler air to enter, may not actually increase HP at all due to the " de-tune" that it may cause because of the physical properties ( other than temperature) of the air that it is providing. Similarly, while the inlet for some systems may actually be in the engine bay, such systems may be engineered ( shorter length intake pipes, etc.) so as to be "tuned" to allow the best phyical properties of the intake air ( quality and quantity) to fill the cylinders better across the entire range.
Bottom line is that if you are choosing a CAI based on whether the intake is outside the engine bay or not, you may not be getting the best system for your needs. It depends on things in addition to the temperature of the air.
Anyone wanting to understand CAI and the dynamics of airflow into an engine need only read up on the principles of RAM induction as a good example of how air intake properties relate to increased horse power.

Re: Question about cold air intake...
Really, by whom?
To date, I've seen one set of dynamometer readings that have been offerered by a supplier . Problems with this include: having no way of knowing what vehicle was actually used and/or not knowing the conditions of the test ie. ) it is proof of nothing anywhere else on the planet.
The only things I know for sure is that the same guys supplying the test are the same guys selling the product & the product sure looks and sounds like it'll give you more HP.

Click the link in my sign.
I proved all you have to do is take off those hoses and it will increase....so that means that on either side of the radiator you will get some kind of increase.
I am running the needswing and they are spot on with there testing and I will be doing dyno time to see what the numbers for there parts are on my car with and with out also.
I am not selling anything, I have bought and ran the stuff and guess what YOU WILL gain HP wether the intakes are inside or outside the radiator...JUST LOSE the stock stuff and ya gain!
Now what the question I can't give ya YET is what gives ya more....right now my opinion is outside.
But soon I will have the numbers....

and I always thought 1hp=1hp . Not in everyone's world, I guess ...YIKES :-)

Keep in mind this is a dyno dynamics...this equates to almost 295 whp on a dynojet.
It is the best dyno to show the gains from mods. Also, we will have the car at our drag event on April 12th and will hopefully have good times.

NeedsWings has a CAI for both the SRT and the NA.
Modulator......I'm the one that owns the NA car in that thread. I can tell you that the testing with the CAI was done minutes after doing the run with the stock airbox. The exact same procedure was used, i.e. 4th gear runs, same temperature, same operator, same car. All testing was done on a bone stock car......no sprint booster, no exhaust, no ecu tune, etc.
Simple fact is.....the CAI DOES make more power, DOES sound better, and IMO, DOES look better than the stock system.
Just so you know.......I'm not making a dime on the sale of these parts. I just know that NeedsWings does a good job of development and testing these parts before releasing them to the public. The quality is top notch. I also want to see him do good because there's very few people doing anything for the performance of the Crossfire.

Re: Question about cold air intake...
ok, uncle... I give up... thanks for all the testimonials
Use whatever numbers you'd like and think they are absolute or even approaching correct... they are hardly scientifically obtained and you guys are hardly scientists - rocket variety or otherwise.
Meanwhile, I'm going out to buy one of those bolt-on spoilers like ya see on all those Hondas....

I'm dying to know.....please enlighten us as to the proper way to subjectively test this, o god of airflow.

Re: Question about cold air intake...
You can argue over dyno charts all you want. All I know is Gary (Valkryderguy) got his "automatic" Crossfire to run 14.7's at the drags with nothing more than a Needswings CAI. That's nearly a 1/2 second faster than any roadtests I've seen for the automatics.
That's enough "scientific" proof for me that it's atleast "better" than the stock air intake.
I have no idea if it has any effect on your warranty or not.
It should be easy enough to remove before you take your car into the shop for any warranty work to be done I would think.
