FORE!!! I think I see a wedge coming you way woodland1. I do agree that hubby is proud of himself and should be. It is a rather scary thing doing something that you have never done or at least with a current vehicle and to get it done w/o breaking anything deserves 10 atta-boys.

I took the headlights, foglights and tail lights out of my daughters XF yesterday getting it ready to be painted and I got to tell you that I felt pretty good about it and I didn't break anything. I still have not figured out how to get the shifter **** off w/o scaring it, but I will keep trying to figure it out. LOL.

On the shift ****, just unscrew the part at the bottom of the **** and let it slide to the bottom of the shift shaft. Then pull the **** straight up and it will come loose. Sometimes you have to exert a lot of pulling pressure to get the **** to slide off, but you won't damage anything.

Here are a few pics of the bad mirror and the process for repair...I'll include a pic of the new mirror and finished project once I get home...http://img153.imageshack.us/slidesho...204035x45.smil

As you can see, duct tape is NO way to go through life!

Nice work on the photos. But, i gotta tell ya, I'm not sure I have ever seen black duct tape. Maybe it is a Washington State thing?

I do not see a screw at the bottom of the shifter ****.

There is not a screw, you unscrew (by twisting) the bottom portion of the shifter ****.

If you look close you will see there is a portion of the **** that is around an inch long (check for a indention or ridge where the two parts of the **** meet. Twist this lower part of the stock **** setup and it will unscrew. When it is no longer attached to the rest of the ****, you can pull the **** off of the shift column.

Seems that it is. I have only noticed the traditional silver colored duct tape.

Perhaps I just live too far back in the woods to keep up with the latest tape fashion.

BTW, what does it cost you to get the oil change service at your local dealer? I had my oil and filter changed today and it cost a smooth $151 + change. It strikes me that ten bucks a quart for the Mobil One is a bit exhorbident. And then there was a $10 oil and material disposal fee charge.
