So, I call my local dealer and ask if they could order me a mirror...The guy I talked to acted put out that I even asked....with a lot of silence and me asking if he was still on the line with me, he declared that he couldn't find any "price" on the unit and that it might take months for Chrysler to even get back to him on such a request for this part as it's not uncommon for them to be very slow to get parts "if they can even get me one". I was pi$$ed, to say the least. So, I asked, "You're telling me that it might be months before you know if a part is available and cannot tell me what a price would be?". He then said, "No, I am saying that I don't know what it might cost and with a situation like this, it might take months....or, (he hesitated), it might take just a day or so....

WTH???? I mentioned that I had been contacted by several Mopar and parts suppliers and on-line the side mirrors are available, and he acted like I was full of it.

I know if my husband had called, he'd have been far more polite...I have an appointment to have my oil changed on Tuesday, and they are going to take a look at it...I'm not going to volunteer how the mirror was broken...I'll let them figure it out...jerks!

I am going to wait replacing it until it's looked at by their service department. The dealership is under new ownership, and I'm withholding judgment on their customer service until I see how my appointment goes.

In the meantime, my mirror is being held by duct tape...It's like I have my makesup smeared all over my face when I'm driving around....it just kills me!

LOL!!! You did have to go the duct tape route after all....

Sorry, it is just a temporary fix and you will soon have the mirror problem resolved.

I can't imagine what the parts guy is thinking. Surely Chrysler, at some level, can tell him how much and how long on the mirror you need. If not, the company deserves to go bankrupt. If you don't have a better handle on your business than that, it is pitiful.

That would be great! I would be most grateful...and I need the Aeroblue...I can send you my Vin number, too. They say they need it to be sure they have the right color code and such...Let me know, okay?

From the looks of it in the service manual (page 8G-24 and 8N-72), you can replace the whole assembly just by removing those two torx head bolts in your picture. You may have to remove the interior door panel if you can't get at the wiring connector / release.

If I were you Golfergal, I would order the part online. When you get it, take a look at what's in the box. I bet you can install it with the right size torx driver. So for $130 + shipping + the price of a torx driver, you're in business.

Worst case scenario, you can't install it yourself, you go to your dealer and find the guy that couldn't even read enough to tell you how much the part was, and show him the part and have someone else install it!

First, get the part.

Second, take it to the dealership and get the service manager in front of you and tell him you need this replaced.

Third, after it's done (and if you have the guy's name) let the service manager know how stupid one of his employees is.

Good luck!

golfergal, If you or someone you know try to replace mirror make sure you disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable, then wait 2 or 3 minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before you remove the interior door panel. This is to prevent the side airbag from accidental deployment. You definitely don't want that going off in you face.

Thanks for the tip! I have an appointment on Tuesday. When I drop the car off, I will definitely talk to who is in charge of parts. This guy acted offended that I even asked...argh..I hate car stuff.

I will see what they say when I go in on Tuesday for my oil change...and if they give me the same song and dance, I'll bring the part number email I received and the name of the on line dealer that said he could help me and see what they say. Isn't that what they are suppose to do? Look for parts for our car?

Well, in theory that is what they are supposed to do. As much money as dealers make off of replacement parts they ought to bow and scrape to every potential customer instead of acting like they are doing the customer a favor by talking with them. Good luck with the dealer and service tech(s).

One would think so...afterall, when he answered the phone, he identified himself as "parts department..ha..

My sister was at her local dealership for her Pacifica and was waiting for her car..the parts guys were milling around within ear shot of her discussing the following:
How much longer until they get off work...
When can they take their next break...
Whose turn was it to answer the phone...
and the clincher...one guy was going around the corner spreading peanut butter on a cracker and stuffing them in his mouth, one after the other...and returnng to the counter...every few minutes, he'd go around the corner to where she was sitting and spread more peanut butter on his soda cracker..hiding it from his co-workers...

Guess his lunch break couldn't come soon enough.

Oh well...I just want my mirror replaced...

Let us hope your need isn't greater than their combined ability to deliver.

You know Gal my local dealer is very competent. They always seem to be able to deliver. Isn't it strange the difference in capabilities between the two dealers when they probably are both five star dealers?

Dealer can replace mirror, parts and labor for $400.00....gulp...I can get a mirror from an on-line dealer for $170.00, but it would have to be painted. Made a few calls about having the part painted and installed..$225...gulp..

Then, I found a part for $139.00 (I'd have to order it and pay for shipping)
Painted for $125.00 (another day or so plus the wait time)
Installed: $45.00 (Craigslist guy and he claims he works for Chrysler and but when I called the number he gave me, the person who answered said no one by "that name" lived at the number...red flag..red flag) Though I may have mis-dialed and the lady told me I had done so...when I called back, I got what sounded like the same lady's answering machine)..???

Total:
Total $319.00

I would save $80.00 ...over the dealer doing it all at one time. No brainer...I just spent my Christmas bonus.

Minor scratching on side of passenger door, too...my husband said that when the dealership called, they "may have mentioned that they could take out the scratch marks on the clear coat and the mirror for $400.00...but, he can't really remember because he was on the other line....argh! He just happened to mention that to me tonight...

I can't stand the duct tape..it's killing me!

And your decision was...??? Are you going with the dealer or the "put it together yourself" deal?

I'll bet the duct tape is holding everything togther just fine

I will take some pics and see what you guys think...my husband, (good guy and all) is not much help when it comes to anything car related.
If your husband is non-chalant about this....wait to you find out what he screwed up

Yes, husband is non-chalant...too busy with work to worry about my Xfire...leaves it up to me to do the research. He did call the dealer today...he was wrong on the price: $498 for side mirror replacement, and I just got a call from the jerk-o-witz part guy that said the part was "out of stock" and has NO idea when another mirror will be found...and the price for the mirror $315.00!

Sooooo, I went back on line..found a black one for $133.00. Shipped to me for $11.00...Made a deal with the guy who painted my bumper when I back into a rock..(don't even go there, okay???) and he can repaint the mirror for $135.00...install for $45.00...I will save over half by doing it this way...such a pain, and yes, the duct tape is actually doing a great job..the mirror works perfectly...just so darn ugly!

With the $$ I'm saving on the repair..(saving???...hmmm.) Give me your best thoughts on a back-up camera! In the Northwest, it's dark by 4 PM, and the rain is so bad and dreary out that it's hard to see what's behind me...I would love any or all suggestions...key words: easy to install and not ugly!!!

Well...it sounds like the mirror will work out for you money wise. At least you won't get ripped off by the dealer.

Nicked the bumper....huh? Well, duct tape can't help on that one.

Key words here are ..."I wouldn't have a clue" as I have never installed a back-up camera. However, I believe I remember seeing a back-up camera thead on the forum not too long ago.

It would seem the major problem would be mounting the screen in your XFire so you can see what is behind you. Other than wiring, the camera end of the job shouldn't be too hard I wouldn't think. No doubt there are mounting kits available.

PM me if you still need the mirror. I will give you a black passenger mirror off the door that I replaced that AMA had kissed by a Honda. I was keeping it as a just in case I did what you did.

Well, I'm pretty sure this is more than you want to spend, but it's a really good backup camera! I replaced my factory car stereo with an Eclipse AVN7000. It's not only a stereo, but also does GPS and has a 7" screen. There's an add-on backup camera available for about $150. The stereo itself is what really cost money. It retails at $1600 to $2000.

You can get just plain backup cameras much cheaper, but the problem becomes where you put the screen. Two popular places are built into your rear view mirror and built into your visor. Unfortuantely, our visors are too small for these screens. You can also mount the screen to the dash, but that's an ugly solution.

Another thing you want to consider is where you will put the camera. There's generally two types of cameras: stick-on and tap-and-drill. The stick-on cameras are obviously less invasive to your car, since they just use glue. They are easier to install. But they can come off due to weather, vibration, and vandalism. If you decided to use a stick-on camera, it's recommended that you install it inside your car, looking out the back window. That's where mine is. (right next to my center brake light)

For drill-and-tap variety you have to drill a hole in your car and bolt the camera in. Ususally they are put into the trunk lid, or next to the license plate.

I hope that helps. A visit to your local car audio installer will help too, since they can show you different choices and the quality of the screens and the view.

There is in a box waiting for fed ex to pick it up. You just might have it tomorrow. I think the shipping will be less than $25. No more tape soon.

I put one my business cards in the box if you can find it. LOL

Don't forget to get it paint matched before the install.
