Default Weight of Roadster vs. Coupe

Hello all,

This is my first post since I picked up my brand new 2005 Alabaster white 6 speed Roadster. My question is about the weight of the roadster when compared to the coupe. Does it weigh less by much? You would think with less sheet metal and the rear glass window gone, this would save some weight, which would mean it is a little faster then the coupe?? is this the case?

The roadster weighs about 100 lbs more due to the additional structure needed to stiffen up the body after you cut the top off. If you just hacked the top off of a coupe, you would probably never be able to close the doors after you opened them and the body flexed. Also, the aerodynamics of the coupe should be better than the roadster, which would mean the couple should be faster. I doubt that it would be enough of a difference for most people to notice though.

I've heard that the roadster is a bit heavier due to extra bracing, as you said. I'm curious about the previous generation SLK then, because there was no coupe version of it. Does this mean that the old SLK was an excessively flexible platform? Did the Crossfire Coupe allow for some bracing to be removed to save weight, where the roadster has the same bracing that the SLK did? Just curious.

I had my 2004 weighed once. It came in at 3,060 lbs with a half tank of gas.

In 2004 they were all limited. No choice.

Also, I would guess that an auto would probably add weight over the manual. Maybe around 75 lbs?

I pulled some numbers from the Chrysler website...
Some don't make any since though...

Roadsters with autos are 3,174 lbs.
Roadsters with manuals are 3,040 lbs.
So there is a 134 lbs difference.

Coupes with autos are 3,084 lbs.
Coupes with manuals are 3,061 lbs.???
This 23 lbs difference. It doesn't seem right for manuals according to the above numbers.

SRT-6 roadster is 3,328 lbs.
SRT-6 coupe is 3,240 lbs.

So, there is a 88 lbs difference on the SRT's vs 90 lbs on reg Crossfires between coupe and roadsters.

But...who knows why the numbers very so much between auto and manual...

Convertible cars are always heavier cars, because the body needs to be stiffened up since removal of roof weakens the chassis.
And the auto tranny will always weigh more, they have more internal parts and hold a couple gallons of oil, also torque converters are really heavy.

Just for comparison's sake, an MGB weighs 2,300 lbs, 90 horsepower. Our cars ARE light and fast, no matter what some folks say.

I agree 100% all convertible models weigh more. Actually not only additional bracing but you'd be surprised the metal frame of a top is heavier gauge than the roof panel so the metal roof vs the convertible with fabric, the weight difference there is not much.

Weighed my Roadster SRT6 couple of weeks back. Subtracting weight of people, it works out to right at 3,200 lbs. I would imagine that the SRT6 roadster would be about the heaviest of the Crossfires...

For what it's worth, according to Expert Autostats (database of over 29,000 vehicles using both vehicle testing and manufacturer data/literature):

2005 Roadster = 3,328 lbs. Curb Weight.
2005 Coupe = 3,060 lbs. Curb Weight.
