Roberta & I are travelling this route next Friday running north from Upstate SC all the way to Fontana Village Resort. Maybe will come across XFires having some fun running south on Friday for 'exercise'.

Anyway, the GCG (at least me) has dubbed it "Twisted Sister" because we didn't know what it was called.
A great tune up before hittin' the Dragon.
It is a great run with fewer crotch rockets and usualy less traffic than the Dragon. However, a lot of residential so be careful.
Please;
Watch out for the kids.
Don't be rude.
After all we are guest there.

Anyway, here's Food for Thought for next Fall. Map below is a potential Southern route that includes a good portion of Moonshiner 28, Cherohala Skyway and The Dragon in the roundtrip. Somewhat longer (205-210 miles), but something to think about. This route is sometimes run by some of the other car clubs (i.e., PCA, BMWCCA, etc.). The VW New Beetle Group we've joined this year is considering this route the 1st weekend in May when they gather in Bryson City for a Dragon Run GTG.

Although the route that I am running on Saturday does not show us running the Dragon, my plan is to stop at Deals Gap for a break, run the Dragon up and back (double run) and then head back to the lodge to prepare for the BBQ (since I'm one of the cooks). Those that would like to make multiple runs on the Dragon are free to do so, and I think most of you are aware of where you are and can return to the lodge at whatever time you choose.

The only way this would probably work being that it is 8 hours is to not have a photo shoot at Fontana Dam in the morning.
We would probably need to leave the lodge at 8am to be back by about 5pm with the stop for lunch of course along the way.
Still want to have the BBQ on Saturday each year to.
It's probably a bit long for most to run on a Sunday but......there is always next year as you said

NOTE:
Due to the high number of people attending the BBQ
I suggest you make room for a folding chair and bring it along to the GTG.
You may need it at the BBQ because I suspect we will have more people than chairs and tables inside the dining room at the Chestnut room.

But I could do without the staged US129Photo pics at Fontana Dam that are setup for us to get individual shots of our cars with each owner/driver. That's what takes considerable time. Imagine having to get 77 cars thru a session like that! You said it yourself, we're leaving earlier this year just so we can make all that happen. I like leaving earlier. But I want to drive, not sit around for a couple of hours!
Maybe we can discuss for Fall 2011 at drivers' meeting on Friday evening.

I think we have a full year to plan for next year. Let's get through this one and have a great time before we get bogged down with the next one. I'm sure the thread will start in about two weeks.

We don't sit around for a couple of hours ...we mingle with the others and look under some hoods and compare mods etc.
Either way the bottom line is we shouldn't hit Robbinsville before LUNCH and it's only a half hour away so we still wont be leaving until around 11:30 anyway as we always have.
I also suspect not EVERYONE (77 cars) will want the individual photos taken either...
although US129photos has offered us an incredible package deal this year for ALL our individual photos from al 3 days on the Dragon and at the photo shoot.
I just backed things up a little to provide more time for all of us to get there, get parked and spend time together...thats all
I'm sorry if you feel that this is not a good use of your/our time.
We can discuss more Friday night as a group but for now I'm only focused on this GTG and would prefer not posting up more discussion on this thread with thoughts regarding next year.

Danimal has made a 100 copies of post #5 here and will be handing out those maps and directions as well.
Dennis,
I think most everyone would want a copy of your pdf files.
Can you print off about 100 copies for each day and pass them out on Friday night along with the maps Dan will be providing ??

Gary,
Make that 78....my grandson TJ turning 22 in Oct. is driving my white 05 Roadster I forgot to include him for the count...he loves Edwina, and the stick shift....his first time down there and of course he wants to drive the Dragon so I hope you guys will take him under your wing so he doesn't fly off a mountain and I would never be able to go back home...LOL

Don't want to change any maps but sure would like a "Non Dragon Map" for us that don't want to slay the Dragon anymore....of course I know we can just turn around and return the same route but I thought I would mention it because there are a few of us....well, me for one,...
