Default Potential New Owner

Hello everyone,

This is my first post, I've been browsing this site for the last week or so and reading about the crossfire. I love the way the car looks and have taken an '04 Crossfire Limited for a couple of test drive and I really like the car. I've read the complaints and I just wanted some feed back from current owners as to whether you would buy your xfire again after owning it for a while? I know there are issues with the cup holder and things like this, but overall are you satisfied with your purchase. How is the resale value holding up? I really like the car a lot and just need a little extra push for the purchase. Thanks in advance.

I'd driven an '04 before the roadsters came out and fell in love with it.
Sure the car has its quirks but I adore it definitely and would make the same choice over again!

I can't say I've checked on resale value - hard to say since they aren't exactly flying off of the shelves, but you never know! The attention that the car gets is always worth it! Good luck in your decision!

Check out the Chrysler site, they're offering new '05 6 speeds for $30,426.

http://www.chrysler.com/crossfire

If you can wait till late summer or early fall, prices will really come down.

As for resale value, using Kelly Blue Book figures a used '04 auto with 20,000 miles private party sale goes for around 24,135. A used '05 auto with 10,000 miles for around 27,265. These figures seem to be way too high. To answer your question, resale/trade-in values are not the best in the world.

And as mention in the above posts, there are some issues with the car but I would buy another one without hesitation. My one suggestion is to check out the 6 speed V.S. the auto stick. The six speed is a tad clunky and not a real smooth shifter. If I bought another one, it would be the auto stick.

Good luck.

I've had the car a month and have had no issues with it. In fact after I got the Eibach springs installed, its just gotten better. Autostick is really useful to me as I already have a standard sports car. So far, I have not experienced any problems of any kind. For what I paid (23K) it was a no brainer.

I forgot about that; the '04 I drove was a 6-speed and very frustrating and a bit hard to drive. I love the auto-stick, especially with all of the lights I tend to miss!

You can buy a brand new 2004 XF Limited Coupe for as little as $24,500. I did just that at Suncoast Chrysler in Seminole (Pinellas County). I bought mine January 2, 2005. Never titled, under 100 miles, no damage or any such thing - just a flat out perfect, brand spanking new car.

Love the car!

Because of the Chrysler badging, the car was marketed lower than if it were badged as a Mercedes. Thus the $35-37k range for a Limited Chrysler Coupe... The XF is really a $53,000 SLK Mercedes, but with a way cooler body. And, the XF is the biggest steal out there! I mean, $24,500!!! C'mon!

I knew I would buy it after driving two blocks. I took it home that day, and traded a Mazda6 that I owned for only three weeks. The Crossfire's engineering and design are brilliant. The car is solid.

And what a tremendous value. Audi, BMW, MB make you pay $5,000 to $6,000 to move from 4 up to 6 cylinders. The Crossfire gives you a MB 320 engine at a $15,000 discount to the SLK320.

Where else can you find 18" & 19" wheels on a $30,000 car?

Forget resale because that's out of your control and you are getting a huge value upfront. You buy a car to drive it, not resell it. And this car is a blast to drive.

Buy a Toyota if you want good resale. But no Toyota gets attention from girls like the Crossfire does.

HI TX, I've had mine almost 2 years, 21k miles! I have done a few mods for improved performance at little cost! As for would I do it again YES, but the next one will have a SRT6 on it. I still can't believe the responses from people after 2 years. I gave away a new 350z Track model to get it. If you want a unique car, as far as looks and style, it will be hard to compare for the $'s. I'd get the autostick again and again. If you test drive one again, try it in 3rd gear around town.

Talking Re: Potential New Owner

Hello!

I have had my Crossfire for almost a year and had a few issues. The dealer took care of some of them and others I will need to live with like the drivers door mirror vibrating to the stereo. In the final analysis, who gives a flip about minor issues. I love the way the car looks inside and out, and most important, I love the way the car drives and sounds. It is the most fun I have had driving a car since my first car.

I would also suggest that you don't worry about the resale value, this is a car for the here and now. Go out and make your best deal and start enjoying the passion of the driving experience. Go out on a remote straight road and get it up to 115+, then go find a remote curvaceous road and really have some fun. Just do it, you will not regret it!

Not to rain on anyone's parade, but let's be realistic: Resale value on these cars sux. The Crossfire is a great little car, a pleasure to drive, dependable, well-built, uniquely styled, somewhat exclusive (thanks to crappy sales), etc. But new ones are not selling well, and no dealer wants one on a trade. If you're sure this is the car for you, and you plan on keeping it for 3-4 years, then go for it. But if you're not sure, and there's a chance you might be wanting to get rid of it in a year or two, be forewarned. If you're buying new, look for a deal that will get you at least $7,000 off MSRP, preferably $8K or 9K off.

When you buy a car..buy it because you LIKE IT and not because of the resale value! Cars are not investments and you loss money from it by the time it gets out of the dealership lot. I really don't care right now if people won't buy a Crossfire, I wanna enjoy the exclusivity for probably 5 years or more if they're not buying crossfires! By the time I'll be selling it, the resale value of my crossfire may even be the same as the Japanese cars that have more resale value now.

Buy it and enjoy it!

I've had my Roadster since March and feel the most redeeming value of the car is that you don't see them everywhere. In fact you don't see them anywhere. I recently drove from NY to VA (Monticello) and saw 1, a Blaze Red coupe right before Monticello. Mind you I wasn't even driving mine at the time. On the return trip in roughly the same spot, I saw another Blaze Red coupe and not another one during the drive. Corvettes are a dime a dozen (I've had 2) as are Porsches and BMW's, so its nice to drive something unique. Regarding the Auto vs. 6 Spd, I drove both before buying. The 6 Spd was a coupe and I felt the shifting was sloppy, not a distinct click into each gear. The auto was in a roadster with the top down and whether it was the top being down or the auto I'm not sure. But for a guy who swore he wanted a stick, I felt the auto was the way to go in this car. If my final choice was TT or S2000 they would have been sticks. Lastly on the quality. Not a single issue with the car. Its put together beautifully in the same factory as the Audi Cabrio, VW New Beetle convertible and other beautifully crafted cars. The materials are excellent and screw the cup holder you shouldn't be drinking in the car anyway. As far as price is concerned, its a steal. Anything you might compare it to is thousands more (other than the S2000 and that's close in price). But the one thing I would close with is that I find it more of a sports car in the sense that an MB 500SL is than a Miata or S2000. Its more a cruiser than a bruiser, at least the way mine is configured, auto/ roadster. You know what, that's perfectly OK with me. The car is stunning.

This thread is about someone looking to buy one NOW. It is not about those that bought XF's when they first debuted (at least, it wasn't intended to...). Yes, those early buyers "lost" money, but i'm sure they gained much enjoyment. What daily-driven cars do not lose value?! Cars are expenses, not investments. Exceptions are museum pieces, which are never/rarely even driven.

Today, to pay $24k for a brand new, untitled XF that lists for $36k can only be described as a STEAL. A buyer today is in a win-win situation. When compared to other new cars that are selling for $24k, i'm pretty sure the XF will hold up its value far better than the average $24K new car...

LOL, the resale debate. Buy what you like and drive it. If you're worried about resale value buy only used cars. Simple.

...you know, I don't miss my Mazda trade-in one bit. Funny, isn't it. But I do suppose that Mazda had better resale value.

I am a fairly early buyer and I have yet to lose a nickel. Good for the guys that are getting in cheap now. But if you wanted exclusivity you should of been here a year and a half ago.

Hi all,

Reading through your posts, I recognize some of you. How are you guys doing?
For those of you I don’t know, my name is Kelly, and I am a Marketing Representative from the Chrysler Information Center. Like I’ve mentioned, I’ve been reading your posts and find your comments interesting. Wondering if I could join your conversation? Maybe I can add, as well as learn some insight.
TampaXFire, by the sounds of it, you’re already hooked to this Sculpted appearance. I figured if you had any other questions, maybe I can help. I haven’t heard from you again. Curious, are you a proud owner yet?
MoparAlleyCat, WOW, nice ride!!! Sweet Rims! People must drool? Guessing from your name, and looks of your Crossfire, you are a Mopar fan? Great!
moneymanager, 3 weeks of owning a Mazda6, then trading it in that soon for Crossfire? Wow, that’s impressive! Besides the engineering and design, what was it that was love at first sight?

Let me know guys if you don’t mind.

Thanks

Kelly

Hey, Kelly.

I think one of the things that keeps potential buyers away, is the misconception that this is an expensive car. I worked hard on the deal for my base coupe, and it came in at $24,300 (before tax and lic). At that price, this is a LOT more car than other two seaters in the same league (Miata, Solstice, etc). But even at an MSRP of $29K, it's not a bad deal. Trouble is, most people are only aware of the pricing on the Limited versions of the car, as that is what debuted (and that is where the initial marketing money got spent).

Oh, and here is what convinced me to buy a Crossfire: I drove one on a whim. Other cars I was considering (and why I turned them down) are as follows:

1) Mazdaspeed Miata (new): Not a premium car, not enough hp (even with the Turbo).
2) Nissan 350Z (new or lightly used): Curb weight too high, as is price.
3) Pontiac GTO (new): I can't give you a good reason why I said "no". Still want one.
4) Corvette 6-speed (approx. four years old): Fast, but built like junk.
5) Pontiac Solstice (new): Not a market proven product yet.

My criteria is that it had to have RWD, seat only two people, feature a manual transmission, and offer decent hp. The Crossfire was/is a very nice mix of performance, refinement, and style.

Hi juddz

Wow! That’s quite a list of competitive vehicles you have turned down, for the striking Chrysler Crossfire. Great to see! Although I am not able to comment on other vehicles, I’m glad that the Crossfire has stood up to your requirements. I agree, it does have a nice mix.
You have the coupe base, right? I understand that model only comes in black clear coat. Have you checked out the Crossfire SRT-6?

Again, thank you for your comments above.

Talk to you soon.

Kelly
