Unhappy Radio Freezing???

Have anyone had any issues with their factory radio freezing on power up? Whe I turn mine on occasionally (probably happens once per day) The "CHRYSLER" logo is displayed and just stays there. None of the buttons are responsive, and the only way to correct it is to turn the car completely off and wait a minute, start it back up and try again.. Sometimes it could take a couple tries...

The dealership keeps telling "No fault found" even though I drove it all the way out there to show them as it was happening!

Any one experience this? Or know what the issues is? (TSB maybe?)

TIA

Viffer

I had this happen to my radio. After I followed the procedure to make both door unlock with one press of the unlock bottom, my radio started displaying the "Chrysler" logo and would not respone to anything. The door lock procedure calls for you to press and hold both the lock and unlock button for several seconds. I think I held the buttons for too long and it effected the radio function. To solve the radio freezing problem all I did was press and hold both button again to reverse the unlocking process. I then pressed and held both buttons for about 5 seconds and now my door both unlock with one press of the unlock botton and my radio plays fine with no more freezing.

Yes, there are several wierd things with this car (not ordinary). You're German, maybe you know why the garage door openers would only want to be used when the car is on?

Theory is... if you parked your car outside your garage and it was broken into then the thief would just have to press the opener button and get complete access to your garage / house. That would not be cool at all.....

If you have the tools try pulling out the radio and disconnect it from the power for at least 10 minutes. Perhaps disconnecting it from the power will fully reset it and clear up your problem. If you don't have the radio tools you could pull the negative terminal off.

The only radio TSB I've seen was early on for a dim display. How old is your car?

My car is a 2004... build number 5454. I am just ulling my hair out with this issue... The dealer says they can't find anyhitng wrong (can't replicate the problem) and when I take it to them while it is frozen they don;t have anyone available to look at it!!! I just want the damn thing fixed. (OK, I am done ranting now...)

I have experienced this exact same thing ONLY ONCE! I too just shut the veh off, went for a coffee and when I came back it worked fine. I also experience the situation where I will put in a CD and the display will get stuck on "TRACK 1". I can hit the T button and it will display "00:00". It will stay frozen like this until I hit the FF button or power off and on.

So far tho, only one incident of freezing on startup. I was just going to keep my eye on it to see if it gets worse.

I know that problem form the German forum. If you start the engine and let it run and you radio goes on then you switch the radio off and the on again. After that your radio will freezing again. Now you can show it at your dealer!

The point of the built in opener is to park my car IN the garage and if I didn't have it built in, I'd have to have a portable remote opener which someone could rip out of my car anywhere and follow me home to see where I live. I have never known anyone that has a built in opener where the thief got in the house that way!
I am thinking the alarm in the car is to let people know that someone is breaking in, just like the alarm on the house.

OK, it's officially Monday here.

Hello, Viffer:
I have experienced the same radio problem three times since last September when I bought the car. The first time I tried immediately pulling off the road and restarting the car. This did not help. The next time I drove a few minutes and then restarted the car. The radio worked fine. Same for the third time. My car is a 2004, number 1149.

I don't know if I have the old or new radio. I bought my Xfire used with 2000 miles on it from a Cadillac dealer! Any obvious way to tell the difference? Many thanks!

The old radio has a black background with green letters. The new radio has a green background with black letters.

Mine hasn't gotten stuck that way...but it has frozen before. Just the CD and radio portion, the nav continued to work fine like nothing was wrong. But neither the CD or radio would play. I haven't had the time to get it into the dealer yet. Turning off the car at a light and restarting it worked until we tried to push CD again, which it repeated the same pattern of only the Nav working as if all was well - by then we were on a twisty road with no place to stop and restart.

Hello, C_Plunkett: I have the new radio (green background with black letters). MoparAlleyCat: I do NOT have the NAV system if that makes any difference. I wonder if DC uses this radio/cd combo on any other cars so we can check other forums for the problem.

I had the radio just display chrysler as well and took it to dealers.
Service assist. saw it not working but as happened with everyone he switched off car and restarted and everything worked fine.
Told me to book it in to be looked at, but as it hasn't happened since I won't be letting them PLAY with my car.(no offer of new radio even though clearly a problem)

On the day it happened I couldn't find my first set of keys and was using the spare set, just wondering if the radio has to set to match signals from different bleeper.

afwill,
Ithink the reason the vent fan goes on is that the xfire has a feature that will heat the car from the available heat in the engine while the car is locked. Very nice if you live in the north. You can shut the car off, go into a store and the car will still be warm when you come back out again. I tried it. It works. Don't know how long it will keep it warm though. Probably as long as the cooling fluid is warm and/or you still have battery. I imagine the battery would last longer than the cooling fluid staying warm.

THe quickest fix I have tried with this problem is simply pulling aside and turning the ingition off. I then start it back up again and it 99% time works. Yeha, I hate it too, but when it works, the radio and the speakers really are one of the better setups to come with any car. The Infinity system in a sebring had more distortion and bass than these, this is a much better sounding setup.

If you ever try to go with an aftermarket brand, you should look inot replacing the speakers too, because I heard that they are individually amplified, so doing aftermarket is quite complicated when it comes to just installing a head unit.

Check out the other post on radio problems too. Chrysler replaced my radio last week because of issues. I'm so tired of them saying the "computer in the car doesn't show anything." My lights still dim down when the engine fan turns on. Taking it to another dealer tomorrow at 7am to have them look at it, on the advice of Chrysler.

I have the same problem! My lights dim when the fan turns on... Please keep us updated when you get an answer from the dealer about the dimming light issue...

The dealer has finally agreed to replace my radio... Thank god...

Well my car is now in the shop, checking on the dimming lights. It only happens when the car hits the 3rd line of the temp gauge. The first dealer told me when the car heats up that a fan turns on and that it was normal. After the 3rd time at that dealer is when I lodged a complaint with Chrysler...using my poor brother as leverage <he's a union chairman at Jeep>. I was told I could pick my car up today at 5pm but I have little faith that this dealer will have any insight into what's wrong. Right now I'm just hoping I can stand the little faults for about 12mths longer when the 350SLK would have been out for a while and bugs will be worked out with it!
