Default Noisy spoiler operation

I've been meaning to ask this question since I bought my 2004 SSB Coupe back in May of last year. When the rear spoiler deploys or retracts I can hear the mechanism at work; it's not terribly loud, but it is noticeable. Having some music playing at moderate levels drowns it out completely. It doesn't sound like anything is straining, clicking, clunking, popping or anything else one would immediately associate with "bad", it just sounds like the mechanism at work.

Is this normal?

I ask because not once have I been able to hear the mechanism in my 2005 Roadster as the spoiler deploys and retracts, and I've owned that car since new. Radio off, top up or down, the spoiler action is just dead silent on that car.

Perhaps it is because the roadster has a partition between the cockpit and the trunk area and the coupe does not. The back wall probably drowns out much of the sound.

So you're saying the mechanical noise I'm hearing in the coupe is normal then?

I was wondering the same thing as my new coupe is very loud compared to my almost silent roadster. The coupe also had a little squeak so I lubed it up good and it helped but being on the hatch I think it is just a matter of not enough insulation and a bit of an echo chamber in the trunk area

My 04 makes no noise at all inside the car or out. Love going" bye" someone an watching that wing raise.

Clean the spoiler mechanism transmission and give the gear wheels some white grease.

Yup. That's what I did. Quiet as a mouse on Valium now.

When I took the plastic liner off the inside of the trunk lid to disable the secret electric locking
mechanism on the roadster, I noticed that the spoiler motor had some white corrosive-like
buildup in one area. It was not making noise but, of course, I cleaned it and lubed with white
grease. It still is silent.
It's relatively easy to take the black liner off the trunk lid. Just be careful not to break any of the
black plastic rivets.

I have a bag full of those if anyone needs one.

I recall always hearing it on my white coupe that I once had. It wasn't "loud", but it definitely wasn't silent. The cargo area is probably amplifying the sound a bit, whereas on the roadster, there is a lot of sheet metal between you and the spoiler mechanism.

Adding the white grease should help.
