Mounting something above lower grill area
Re: Mounting something above lower grill area
Mine came with brackets that allowed you to mount to the upper, lower or backside of the opening. I simply mounted to the lower grills only cause it was much easier to drill a single hole in them instead of the body panel, plus they could be installed off car and then snapped back into place!

Re: Mounting something above lower grill area
I had planned to mount them to the lower grills but I really don't wanna mess up the stock ones and I don't want those overlay kind that attach to the stock ones? I like that full replacement that Cyril got a few years ago but I'm thinking they don't make 'em anymore. Anyone know about any full replacement lower grills that don't require the originals to be behind them?
If I can find full replacements made of metal I would just connect to those.

Re: Mounting something above lower grill area
You could get away with mounting them on the OEM lowers by bolting through the open mesh but they would be positioned alot closer to the center line that way. Mine has one end bolted through and one self tapper going into the solid portion. I doubt you'll ever see the hole once they're removed unless you get right down there and look for it.
You could also fab some sort of "L" clip that you slip behind the upper edge of the lower grill. They should stay in place once you snap the grill back in place.
Some of the DRLs are even light enough to possibly be velcroed in place.

Re: Mounting something above lower grill area
I found mounting DLRs to the lower grill area to be more challenging than I first thought. The problem I found mounting to the lower grill angles the lights outward. The farther outboard you mount the lights, the more they splay outward. It would work if you placed a spacer of some type behind the outboard side of the bracket to make the lights shine straight ahead. I tried that and didn't like it because the spacer was to obvious - to me anyway. I decided to mount the lights to the underside of the bumper in front of the lower grill instead of to the grill itself. This area isn't square either so I have to improvise some thin spacers so the lights didn't shine upward. As much as I hate to holes in my car I used small sheet metal screws. By mounting them this way I could square them up so they pointed straight ahead. Because of the bumper's curve I wasn't able to mount them as far outboard as I wanted but I'm still happy with how it worked out.
One potential problem with mounting them this way, is they must be removed to get the lower grills off. Mounting them to the grill means they come off with the grill. I chose form over function.
FYI Mine are Philips Daylight 8s which are bright and compact and come with a power sensing module which turns them on automatically when the car is running.

Re: Mounting something above lower grill area
The degree of outward position is somewhat nominal. These are DRLs which are not lighting the road but are just for drawing attention during daylight hours. My Osrams have a large enough lens area to be noticed at slight angles.

FYI...mine are wired straight to the battery and are fed through a module that allows the lamps to turn on when the car starts. They can also be wired through the module to turn off when the headlights are turned on, but I have them on all the time the cars running.
