Ignition Key Will not turn?? 2005 Coupe
Ignition Key Will not turn?? 2005 Coupe
Key will not turn in ignition, battery died and I replaced worked fine yesterday. Got in car today and key will not work,
Tried locking and unlocking doors, also tried turning anti towing on and off. Even disconnected battery and reconnected (this sounded alarm)
Again tried locking and unlocking, nothing works. Any ideas.

Re: Ignition Key Will not turn?? 2005 Coupe
Sounds like the "Sticky Key Fix" is required.

Re: Ignition Key Will not turn?? 2005 Coupe
If the key will physically not turn, then it is probably the sticky key issue. Try to get the key working by moving the steering wheel, especially if the wheels are turned far in one direction - move the wheel to take the "pressure" off the key lock. The sticky key fi is much easier if the key is still working.

Carl, if you got that fixed for $350 you better tell us the dealer - cause we all are going there. The fix takes 1 to 1 1/2 hours, so labor alone is $150 or so. If they only charged $200 for the part, you have a GEM of a dealer there. Typical charge to replace the key assembly with parts and labor is usually some $500 to $900.
That is why *someone* took the assembly apart and figured out what was really going on. The fix is simple, requires no parts and takes 1 to 1 1/2 hours - same as dealer's replacement of the assembly.
TAKE NOTE: The new part they put in, apparently, does not have the two parts in it we take out with the mod. So the 'factory' has figured out the problem and, in effect, does the same 'mod' as we do, only with new parts. I did the mod on my car when it locked up three years ago - 52000 miles later - never a problem again.

Re: Ignition Key Will not turn?? 2005 Coupe
Most cars were built before 2006 -they are over 8 years old. I doubt you will get a recall action from Chrysler.
And besides, it's an under $200 fix if you print the instructions and take them to a local shop or shadetree mechanic.
This is ONE thing with the car that is cheap to fix!

1. handy limb to hang the chain hoist on.
2. who needs jack stands ? Just whack off a suitable branch.
3. dog can stay in the shade and you don't have to clean up the poop.
4. stays pretty dry unless there is a big downpour, tools don't get TOO rusty.
5. no fluid messes to clean up, just drain 'em where you are.
6. you get to experience the great outdoors and wave at your neighbors when they drive by.
7. sometimes the neighbors will stop, and you can compare guns.
Re: Ignition Key Will not turn?? 2005 Coupe
I went to get in my car this cold Indy morning and my key won't turn. I tried graphite, blow drier, vibration on key ignition with no luck. I am not that skilled to take it apart and do the fix that I wish was done. Would a locksmith be an option to save on cost or does anyone have any other suggestions, Thanks
Re: Ignition Key Will not turn?? 2005 Coupe
Already been through this Indy....U may try squirting wd-40 in it . A couple of yrs ago the dealership got me for $1,500 , had to have it towed . A good local repair shop may B able to help you , but U may or may not B able to keep your old keys. They say the problem is in the "plastic tumblers" vs. metal ones . We have a large group on the site w/same prob. Look us up . We tried for a recall but heard nothing...Ron in Louisville.

Do the sticky key fix as described and be done with the problem for ever, you do not need a new ignition lock and therefore would not need new keys.
Re: Ignition Key Will not turn?? 2005 Coupe
100/80 is, as usual, right. Our sticky key fix is the answer and it has nothin to do with tumblers; the surgery prescribed takes about 90 minutes max and any local shop or shadetree mechanic can do the fix with only a handful of tools. And this has to be true, because I did it myself, in my garage, with no help except for the printed PDF from this site.
If I can do it, any local shop with a guy who can read and follow directions should be just fine. This is ONE time I don't think an MB garage is needed.

The original post has been damaged as the poster took down his photos but it was rewritten by someone else in September 2009 and they did a better job of it.
Re: Ignition Key Will not turn?? 2005 Coupe
Well, yea. I bought the Red Roadster in July of 2009 and knew about the fix after attending the fall Dragon in October 2009.
I never put the fix on that car, tho.
But this one locked up with NO WARNING a month after I bought it.
FIX IT NOW, even if you have NO SYMPTOMS, drilling the pin out due to a lock up makes the job way too tough!!!!
