Default owner to be - question/help needed

first of all, great forum, congrats to all the contributors...so many info in here and I searched a lot before asking but need some extra advice.
I have found a low priced xfire that allows me to own this beautiful car. Thing is that the current owner told me that it is slipping gears...haven't seen or driven the car so I can't be very descriptive about the problem. The car from photos seems not in the best shape but it is a pretty good deal and I really want it. Can you help a little bit of what to expect problem and cost of repair for possible scenarios causing this issue? Can it be transmission fluid leak? Simple as the fluid change? The module for transmission? Anything else you can contribute and repair costs for these cases?
Thank you all in advance and keep enjoying these gorgeous cars.

How many miles on this car, year and price. We assume it is an auto, but you never know with some peoples knowledge and descriptions on cars though.

Thanks for the response and the link!

It has 64k miles (seems a little bit neglected though as I mentioned earlier), it is an auto and it has this transimission problem as the previous owner says. Now, how bad is this slipping of gears, I don't really know as I haven't driven it. I think that the price is right as after negotiations we agree at 4,500 so I thought that even at worst case scenario I could get a used transmission (ebay 600-900) and have it installed as is (300-500??, it is going to be plug in not repair so I guess the amount is reasonable) and own it with 6000 total. What do you think? I would like to save some of the extra 1500 that I accounted for though. This is my case if everything else checks out though...Again any advice on what the problem could be will be highly appreciated.

That's a very good price if you can in fact get it repaired and running for that much..

that's the question I have.. what are the possible problems and cost of repair? Do you think that I have budgeted too low for the repair?

ITEMS: ( other than the tranny issue )
1. Battery : $120 - $170
2. Oil change w/filter : $60 - $90
3. Air filters : $25-$30
4. Cabin filter : $16 - $25
5. Tires : $750 to who knows

All that being said, you didn't specify the year, so we don't know if it is the N/A or SRT6 model. Also, is it a coupe or roadster ?
If it is an SRT6, then that is one dynamite deal, however also factor in a new I/C pump : $120-$150

Best case : low fluid.
Worst case : who knows ?
Repair ? fugetaboutit, unless you know a RELIABLE Mercedes transmission repair facility.
Best bet is a scrap yard one local to you ( $350 - $2100 on car-part.com )

If this car is black and a kid owns it, forget about it. Looked at one like you discribed. Hit in rear (bad paint on bumper) and trans is toast, but that is the least of the issues. Let it run for about 10 mins and listen for the lower end knock. Sounds like someone is hitting the block with a hammer. I think it will need a motor and a trans. There are a lot better deals out there. A few runners with about 80K on them for around 7K to 8K. If we are talking about the same car, it was neglected and you will be into it for over 10K when all said and done. JMO

My two cents: auto transmissions in these cars are pretty rugged. If it was damaged, to me it is a clear sign of abuse and I would run away. I cannot see you getting it fixed or replaced for under $2-3k. As another poster suggested, there are a lot of 2004-05 coupes for sale with 60-80k that have been well cared for. Why buy a large unknown problem with possibly many hidden small--large problems.

Don't know where the dollar figure came from..

Transmission Assy Chrysler Crossfire 2004 Automatic Auto at 21K | eBay

But I'd still be leary of a car that the owner managed to trash the tranny. I'd say no TLC involved.

I'd say go for it, OTHER than Vinny's comment - now I'd say TREAD CAREFULLLY !!!!

If all you want is an 04 with auto with 60,000 miles on it, I'd think you can buy one from a private owner for less than $10,000.

MANY people are running on hard times and the first thing to go will be "toys" or luxuries. Now, other than a single guy like myself, most of us have no use for a Crossfire other than as a weekend toy - tread carefully. SOMETIMES, spending more to buy means that, in the long run, you spend less.
