Default Mystery part: LP-MDD Sensor ???

Calling all experts!
Approx. the front 1/3 of the armrest storage in my SRT is taken up with an internal shelf/bulkhead insert which seems hollow so I thought, if this was removed, it could usefully increase the feeble storage capacity of the XF interior.
By removing the open storage insert just forward of this (cupholder in earlier cars?), I got access to the fixing lugs of this little 'shelf' and easily removed it.
Fixed to the inside is a small flat black box attached to a four-wire connector - the lead runs forward into the centre console.
My question is - what is it?? - and if I can mount it at the front of the armrest storage area (without the shelf insert piece), will it still work OK?
The label reads:
LP-MDD Sensor
A 193 820 34 10 (which looks like a M-B part number)
ZH-27 / ZH-29
18535057 IRELAND
Rec No: 902939
The are more smaller nos. including a serial.
Searching Chrysler and M-B parts databases reveals nothing definite.
The only thing that came close was 'Passenger Discrimination Sensor' which I believe is part of the SRS system - if so, it's obviously important!
I tried a search of the Forum but that came up blank, too.
Any help appreciated!

I believe that is the "lateral motion sensor", part of the BAS/ESP.

YAW YAW YAW YAW, I put a switch on it to limit control in autocrossing, i.e. slide more. See my gallery for more detail or see the posting Woody

+1 this is most likely what you are looking at. Pics would help to be sure but if it is, moving it forward shouldn't be an issue. I would try to keep it centered to where it is currently though. I'm not sure if moving it towards one side of the car or the other would effect the reading. Basically this is what triggers the traction if it detects too much lateral movement. (Regardless if traction is turned off or not) I know somebody has disconnected it before so they could do donuts without triggering the traction control but not sure if that would also cause a BAS/ESP light.

Thanks Guys - pics below if it helps.
It is crucial that it remains horizontal to function correctly?
Or can I mount it on edge at the front of the storage area - assuming I can rig up some sort of secure bracket...?
