Default dip stick vs. level sensor

My 1st oil change with 8 quarts (thanks forum, 2004 manuals say 6 qrts.), was exactly to the top of the norman range on the dipstick and the level sensor said "OK".

Now at 3500 miles since the change the level sensor says "- 1.0 qt" BUT it is only about 1/5 of the way down from the top of the normal rnage on the dip stick. I do not want to overfill it.

The question is, is the range on the dipstick really "one quart from low to full" like the manual says (and I am ony 1/5 of a qt. low) or is the manual WRONG (just like it is when it says that an oil change is 6 quarts) and I am really one whole quart low like the sensor is indicating? If the level sensor is correct the range on the dipstick could be 5 quarts if it is proportional!

Manual says 8.5 qts, so I would carefully add 1/2qt and see what happens. If I lost 1qt in 3,500 miles I would be worried.
I added 8 liters and that took it to the max.

I have been on this forum for about 5 years......I don't recall anyone ever having to add oil between oil changes?

How many miles on your XF?

Does anyone know the range on the dipstick? If that set range "area" is one quart, like the manual says, then I have only used about 1/5 of a quart.

After the oil chage the level was exactly at the top of that range "area" on the stick and it is around 1/5 of the way down from the top of that range "area" now.

Thanks

You're right about the owner's manual saying the dipstick shows one quart, but my oil changes only need 8 quarts, not 8.5. Maybe it doesn't all drain out. I don't know.

After an oil change the level will drop a little to fill the filter and some lines maybe when the engine is run.

8.5 on my SRT's. I drain mine the old fashion way... Top sider's don't always get all the oil out. I drain mine, and let it set for awhile...to make sure it all for the most part drains out.
I will always trust the dip stick over any electronic device...

8 quarts here with NO usage in between changes. If I were you, I'd add a little, check, if needed add a little more, check and so forth and so on. If your loosing a quart I hope it's leaking on the ground and not seeping into the combustion chambers.
