camshaft rattle ???
camshaft rattle ???
Heres one to querie...
Since i had my XF ... a few months now....
It rattled as the engine ground to a halt when switched off....
Still does this, but there is now a camshaft rattle noise when ticking over.
It is only coming from the right hand engine cover.... so im.presuming is there and camshaft related...
Still there at higher revvs but harder to hear....
Is this engine an overhead cam with the cams directly under the covers or are they buried.... how easy or difficult is it to fix a noisy camshaft....

Re: camshaft rattle ???
Could this possibly be a simpler issue due to the switch off rattle..... where by the gear wheel is loos and rattley possibly ?
Never had one of these engines apart and not familiar with it....
The vehicle ia properly serviced and is full of oil... lots of pressure and no hint of an.okl light

Re: camshaft rattle ???
Is your xf a manual equipped car? Mine rattles a bit when I shut it off, this is due to the springs in the clutch. Nothing to worry about.
As far as a tick up high, probably a lifter problem. A tick at first start up, but goes away within a few seconds is not a big deal on an engine with some milage on it. If it continues to tick then you probably got a spec of crud in one of the lifters that is blocking off the supply hole for the oil. It may or may not work itself out.

I literally just got out of the Chrysler dealership and was told the same about the switch off rattle.... its the thrust bearing.... as you say....
Re the cam noise... its gone... and the same suggestion you made...
Some crud that will likely go away too...
Mine is a.manual transmission... and I was told thet these boxes are made of cheese.... expect problems beyond 40k......
Not encouraging..... especially as id expect its impossible to get an auto box to talk to the computer let alone fit ???
The Chrysler guy did say that these engines are bomb proof.... keep it lubed and itll keep working forever :-)
Thats what i like to hear...
Big smiles now.....
Im still trying to find an after market noisier exhaust in the South of England.... any one know where for one ???
Thanks and regards

Search is over.. just gut yours and weld back.. no drone etc. In the plans when the car is going to be sitting still long enough for it.. LOL. There is a thread on this.

Re: camshaft rattle ???
I suspect that the only manual transmissions in XFs that appear to be made of cheese are in cars belonging to second or third owners that have no clue how the previous owners abused the vehicle. At the 80,000 mile mark my 6 spd still feels like it was cut from a single block of titanium.
Re message about the silence......
can i literally cut it open, gut it and re-seam it back togethere ???
Ive done many silencer repairs in the past, but never gutted them.
What sort of noise will it make ?? Bloody awful .... or just growl louder ?
and you sure it wont done inside the car ??

Brilliant.... thankyou. I'm sold.... I'll do the muffler gutting asap when ive got access to my tools again soon... which are in storage since my divorce 3 years ago.....
I had ideas of spending about $500 on a sports tail box......
The write up suggests that it doesnt sound tinney, and it a deaper throatier rasp when under load....
I like the idea.
Will post pics when I get a chance to do this.
Many thanks again.

It is only coming from the right hand engine cover.... so im.presuming is there and camshaft related...
Still there at higher revvs but harder to hear....
Is this engine an overhead cam with the cams directly under the covers or are they buried.... how easy or difficult is it to fix a noisy camshaft....
