Default Headliner reupholstering.

So, I finally went to JoAnn fabrics and got some headliner material to redo my headliner with. used 3m 77.. scraped off all of the old foam... laid the fabric on the headliner, folded in half. Liberally covered underside of half of headliner and fabric with 3m. Gave it 2 minutes to tack. Worked my way up the fabric pressing it into the headliner and smoothing it out. Repeated on second side 30 minutes later.

This was Friday night. Sunday evening, I put the headliner in.

Tuesday afternoon, the headliner fabric is hanging from each side of the center fin (but still stuck on the fin itself.

WTF. -_-

I did my headliner and all trim and pillars in black suade.. perhaps you may thave stretched the material a little too tight at the edges and couldn't hold.. try spraying the 3m and when its wet taking a foam roller roll over the glue, it helps it stay on the surface as opposed to just sinking into the foam.. good luck brother

After you scraped off the old foam, did you scour the surface or do anything to prep the surface / remove the old adhesive?

Also how 'heavy' was the new material?

All of that trouble to save a hundred bucks! I had a professional do all the work on mine 4 years ago and it cost me 120 (plus I gave him a 20 dollar tip). My headliner is still going strong. This is an easy and fast job for a professional and worth every penny.

Mine is just now starting to come loose a little by the rear window, I think that I will use a professional when the time cimes. They did my truck's a few years ago and there is no way I could duplicate the quality.

The cheapest quote I found in Arkansas was $230 if I pulled and installed the headliner myself.

The fabric was pretty heavy but marked as "headliner fabric"..

You're right about the edges though. I do believe that I stretched the fabric in the corners facing the front of the car, and the tension slowly pulled the fabric away from the headliner board.

I guess I'll try it again, when I can. Or look for new quotes on getting it done now that I live in Washington.

On a side note, I broke two of the white clips that secure the rear plastics -- anyone know what I can do to replace them?

You can find a professional that will do it cheaper. Keep looking. The average price in my area for our crossfires is probably 140 for everything. Let a pro do it.

I'll take a look when I have some free time. You know, I think this issue happens in virtually all coupes, it's kind of sad the number of people having to fix an issue that many cars 2-4x the age don't have.

I have tried to tell many people here that our cars may be great.. But they all have the same flaws. They all have common problems... Like the headliner and ignition ley problem. People think i am crazy but this is true! This headliner is one of them. If you have a coupe it is going to fall. It is just a matter of time. I live in a hot climate so mine fell at only 3 years old. But eventually every headliner will fall. Even the guy doing my headliner thought it was strange after 40 years in the business. He said he never saw one fall on such a new car.

I love this forum. I did fix the "sticky key" myself but am now having the upholstery problem. Yay! I have read several people have done this themselves but have not seen a reply on how to actually do it myself. Would anyone that has done it themselves give a brief explination. Do the plastic pieces in front and rear just "pop" off, how does the programable opener come off etc... Any help would be appreciated.

Here is a hint... Save yourself time and money. Let a professional do it for 125 dollars. That includes everything! It will take them half the time and it will be done right forever! Go buy a beer and sit by the pool.

I found a good writeup from another member.. may not answer all your questions but it's worth a read...

The service manual is a good resource to know the sequence. I did it this way:
a.- Remove the sun visors (2 screws for each)
b.- Remove mirror from the base glued to the glass (pray then pull straight down)
c.- Remove the plastic over the interior lights (popsicle stick works)
d.- Remove the 2 screws holding the interior light assembly on
e.- Unplug the 2 wire conections (interior lights and garage door opener)
f.- Remove the side pillars (I inserted 2 wooden kitchen utensils from the top and pulled rather hard towards the interior, they snap off)
g.- Pull the rear sail trim panels down until one plastic clip lets loose
h.- Pull the center of the headliner push pin down (by the rear glass) and remove the trim pin
i.- Move the seats all the way front and recline them all the way back
j.- Gently pull on the perimeter and it will come down
k.- I don't know how I got it out the passenger door but thats where it comes out, take your time so you don't damage the corners. It's real tight and won't come out if the angle isn't just right. You can't come out diagonally or backwards or any other way except the installed orientation, front slightly diagonally down. Good luck!
l.- I forgot to remove the garage door opener but it was unplugged and come out with the headliner.

I know on the auto sticks, removing the shifter **** gives a little more clearance. It is a very tight fit through the passenger door opening.

You don't need to remove the mirror or shift ****. Fold seats foward put passanger window down and take out side door. WORK SMARTER NOT HARDER

all u do uis at the top of both c piller covers inside, pull it down, you don't need to take it out, just a lil space. in there u'll see one black clip (same as the one on the side carpet), take that off. and the liner is free the rest is just the front light, and visors and a pillars and weather strip.

then to take it out the car, u don't need to turn the liner, it will come out in the same direction as the roof thru the passanger door. just force it and keep moving i different angles. lemme know if u need any other help.

I thought you had to remove all the interior plastic trim around the hatch areato get it down. So just pull the plastic trim down where the headliner and the plastic meet and I'll see a black plastic clip, thats it?

youll see it holding it, no need to take off those huge pieces, just open enough to put your hand in. u use a flat screw driver or pry bar or something to take the center of the clip off first, then the outer piece. check the ones on the side carpet if u wanna see how the clips work

to clip those pieces (c-pillars) back in, put them toward the side of the car first, then up.the clips will break if u try going stright up. dont' ask how i know. lol

Not going to offer phone number for shop with this... I'd sure like to verify.. this was also noted in the thread..

Price was to be $175 for the headliner by itself or $225 with all the other little panels covered also. If I had dropped off the car that basically would double so I just pulled everything myself, only took an hour.

I've got my headliner out of the car.. been driving that way for a couple of weeks now... (sure is noisy during a downpour...LOL) So I've stripped the old material off of what looks to be a pressed paper, or foam material, and I've got new material to replace the fabric with... I've got the headliner on the table, and I'm looking at it wondering if anyone has ever tried just painting it... Maybe covering it with Fiber Glass cloth and resin, or maybe even Rhino Liner. I used Denatured Alchohol and a plastic spatula to strip off the old foam, and most of the old adhesive, and I'm searching now to find something to get the rest of the "Sticky stuff" off the fiber board...

So has anyone tried some kind of a "Spray Cover" ?

LOL.. well, I don't want to go that far.. LOL... Just love DIY, and like being different when I can...

I fiberglassed the Headliner of a T-Top Camaro back in the day, but that was because it was water damaged, and I needed to "Rebuild it" That thing probably outlasted the car.. LOL

I'm a little concerned that the adhesive that's available "over the counter" isn't going to be strong enough to cut through any sticky stuff and adhere well enough to last.. and I only want to go through this once..

My headliner is creeping itself loose in the hatch and around the windshield...
