Hi all,

I've recently been having a few issues with my crossfire starting and ive noticed it's been getting worse over the last week or so. I'll turn the key but the engine wont turn over, it can take 3-4 tries before the engine is running. I've had a diagnostics on my car which has given the fault codes P0341 & P0410. From looking into this it seems that the Camshaft Postition Sensor and Secondary Air Injection System are known faults with the Crossfire.

Ive also read that the Crankshaft Position Sensor can be a culprit for not starting as well as the Camshaft Postition Sensor. I've also read that these issues can cause your car to die while running!! My check engine light is on and this is something that I would like to fix ASAP as I use my car to commute to work daily, I also use it to get about for meetings so a dead crossfire in transit would be my absolute worst nightmare!

I'm no way technical or confident with working on my car so it's likely that I'll have to take this to a mechanic but before I do so I wanted to find out what would be the best way to approach this.

Although I haven't had a fault code for the Crankshaft Position Sensor, should I look to replace this as well as the Camshaft Position Sensor? Or should I just start with the Camshaft Position Sensor? Also around how much am I looking at spending for these parts and how long should it take a mechanic to install one or both parts if required. I live in Maidenhead/Reading in Berkshire, so if there is anyone who you know or could recommend that would be really appreciated.

Sorting out the starting issues with my car is my first priority but I also have a problem with the P0410 fault. From what I understand this air injection system is in use for about 60 seconds when the car initially starts up. Will this damage my car if i don't attend to this right now?

Lastly if you have any other suggestions or points on my issues please put these forward. Thanks in advance

 

Sorry your having problems with your baby! Don't forget the RCM repair! PM tighted1 (I think thats his name) and see if he can send you a loaner RCM then you send him back your RCM. It'll only cost you a 10 spot and if you ever see him, a beer. I am saying this because it could be the dreaded bad solder joints or the carbon crusted relay contacts on that RCM! This is what I would check first!

 

Since you are getting a camshaft sensor code you should replace the sensor..... it is about $50 - $70 I think and about a 20 minute job (if your slow) to replace....it is located on the passenger side, front of the engine...

I agree that it sounds like your RCM likely has solder joint issues.... if you have a friend who knows how to solder you can use the DIY here and take care of it in short order.... if you just buy a new one and replace it it is about $175... DO NOT throw the old one away if you do this..... send it to tighed1(DJ) and he will use it to help out other folks with similar issues....

 

This guy is in the UK,so sending the RCM is not worth it, someone over there should start a similar repair service.

Welcome to the forum, in my youth I used to go fishing in Sonning, and had an Aunt in Woodely ?, nice area.

Replace the cam shaft sensor. The air pump will not damage the car but it should be repaired. Do you hear the pump running or not?, as you say it should run for a while and I guess yours is not. It may be just burnt contacts in the RCM or the pump may be shot, even a bad ground of the wire screwed to the pump.

Forget about the crank shaft position sensor as long as the current one is working.

When you say it will not turn over, I understand that to mean the engine does not move at all, am I correct? People use all sorts of terms and each means something different to the next person. If the engine does not move then it could be bad contacts on the battery or the cables somewhere. It could also mean that the RCM has bad solder joints and needs re soldering.
A dealer would want to replace the RCM and they are not cheap and can be fixed. If you have it replaced make sure you get the old one, you can repair it and use it as a spare.

Thanks for the response guys, do you know what the part number is for the camshaft position sensor is? I did try to look at the RCM but I was really struggling to get it out of the protective case and I was worries about accidentally damaging the circuit board. I think I may just replace the RCM myself as I'd rather not make a complete mess of the current one but trying to solder it.

What I mean by not turning over is that the engine will not start at all, you can hear the starter motor but the engine doesn't start. It can take a few try's and it's pretty intermittent, ive noticed that this tends to happen in between stops after I've been driving.

In relation to the air pump I can hear it working when the car starts, the check engine light keeps turning on and then off again on its own accord. Ive got 62000 miles on a 2004 model.

And yes Sonning is a lovely area I'm not too far away in Shinfield and love it
