Exclamation Urgent Oil Help - Service Tommorow!

Hi Guys,

I have just booked my car in for a service with Kwik-Fit. This is only an 'Inbetween service' oil and filter change, cheap and cheerful to keep my oil fresh. They have advised that the Manufacturer reccomended oil is Mobil 5w-30 for the Crossfire.

The manual states 0-40 I am pretty sure, I questioned this with them and they said that under there "Do Not Use This Oil" part is says that 0-40 appears and that under no circumstances can they use this oil.

Does anybody else use 5w-30 in there car or provide any guidance?

The service is tommorow so urgent help would be great

Thanks

This is what I thought and said to them! Will it matter too much? or not?

If there will be an impact I will cancel the appointment - Just though it was best to check with the people that know which is you lot!

As long as 0w40 is available I will use it in the Crossfire. If not available one day, then I will be concerned about what next to use.

0W40 highly recommended. I do believe that 5W40 can also be used (I have seen it on MB list of supported oils for the engine).

I went to buy a oil filter from a dealer and they told me that crap too...I called my friend who works at another dealership and he says all they use is 0W-40...I would go with that...I heard something about them giving the dealers the option and that it was ok to use 5W-40 but I have decided to keep using the 0W-40

PS...When I was speaking about the dealership, I was talking about a Mercedes dealership...

Just to confuse you a little more, I'm using 0W-30 Castrol Syntec European Formula. It is approved for the Mercedes Benz 229.5 requirement.

Quite a few oils meet the 229.5 spec. The list is on this forum somewhere, but of course I can't find it right now.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe that Chrysler and their dealerships have standarized on Penzoil Synthetic.

On my last trip there, I inquired about Mobil 1, and was told the Penzoil story, as it applied to Chrysler.

They put in Penzoil 5W40 Synthetic and told me it met all the Chrysler certs for the Crossfire.

I'm sure Penzoil makes a decent high quality synthetic, and how much of a difference can there be between 0W40 and 5W40, when it comes to a cold crank in the northern climites.

Inquiring minds would like to know...

When I first bought my XF, the local Chrysler dealer said that Chrysler said to use Quaker State Q Diesel Plus, 5W-30. No 229.5 recommendation on the bottle, but I went 5,000 miles on it and didn't burn any. How's that for a scientific test?

Kwik Fit / Halfords, all rip off merchants.Try an independent garage.I can guarantee they will try and find faults with other things such as tyres and brakes...

Thanks for all the replies and info Guys!

There are so many different opinions and views on this. Personally I think Chrysler.com should have a list of all there cars made and oil options for them (Up to Date) This would sort everything out

Under my hood, in VERY plain sight, is a factory sticker-Mobil 1 0W-40. That's all I've ever or will ever use, until told other wise by my mechanic.

I've been using AMSOIL 5w-40 which has these specs.

Mercedes Benz 229.31, 229.51

Besides, my car really thrives on it.

This. I have no doubt other oils can be used, but why rationalize something else? There is nothing urgent about the oil change you are describing and I wouldn't do it unless you are putting something into the car that is supposed to be there.

Look at the sticker. Look in the manual. Easy decision :-)

What is an 'in between' oil and filter change? Is this when you use cheap oil and filters?
Let's hope this philosophy does not lead to an 'in between' engine rebuild.

If I recall the sticker says 'Recommended'. Obvious B2B tie in. Any oil that adheres to the MB spec will keep it in warranty. Why change to something else? Cost and/or availability. Simple.

Climate plays a big role here....Crossfire Mannaul states ONLY to use 0W-40, all I use. Mobil 1 is what I try to get, but I would only use 0W-40 in the Crossfire.
